The Role The Accounting Manager manages core accounting operations and key components of the monthly close process, including balance sheet, accounts payable, reconciliations, and financial reporting, ensuring that financial records are accurate, timely, and compliant with GAAP and internal control standards. Working closely with the Controller, the Accounting Manager plays a key role in supporting the annual audit, regulatory filings, and financial process improvements. The Accounting Manager also collaborates with department leaders on budget monitoring. As an integral part of the Finance team, the Accounting Manager helps strengthen financial systems, improve processes, and support organizational planning through reliable financial data and analysis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit or similarly complex organization
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, general ledger accounting, and financial reporting processes
  • Demonstrated experience with month-end close, balance sheet reconciliations, and journal entry preparation and review
  • Experience overseeing accounts payable processes and expense management systems
  • Proficiency in Excel, including formulas such as lookups, SUMIFS and tables
  • Experience working with ERP or accounting systems with large financial datasets
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify discrepancies, determine root causes, and implement solutions
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-finance staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams
  • Commitment to maintaining strong internal controls and financial best practices

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with nonprofit accounting, including cost allocation or grant-funded programs
  • Experience supporting annual audits and Form 990 preparation
  • Experience working with government-funded programs or Uniform Guidance requirements
  • Experience with Sage Intacct, Bill.com, or similar cloud-based accounting platforms
  • Experience developing financial reports or dashboards for departmental or leadership use
  • CPA, CPA candidate, or advanced degree in Accounting or Finance

Responsibilities

  • Lead key components of the month-end close process, partnering with the Controller to ensure completion by the 10th of each month.
  • Proactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues that may delay the close process.
  • Oversee the preparation of adjusting and reclassification journal entries, including large entries using journal entry imports, ensuring compliance with GAAP and proper supporting documentation.
  • Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations and ensure accounts are supported by accurate schedules and documentation.
  • Review the trial balance for completeness and accuracy, investigating and resolving discrepancies.
  • Analyze fluctuations and variances in financial results and develop processes to support ongoing variance analysis.
  • Escalate complex accounting issues to the Controller when appropriate.
  • Prepare monthly budget-to-actual reports and assist the Controller by analyzing variances.
  • Support departmental budget meetings by providing financial reports and analysis.
  • Develop ad-hoc financial reports and analyses to support leadership decision-making and organizational planning.
  • Support the planning and execution of the annual financial statement audit, 990 filing, 1099 filing, and NICRA process, working with the Controller to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and investigate discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Monitor account balances and work with the Controller to maintain appropriate cash levels across accounts.
  • Assist with cash flow forecasting as needed
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial systems, reporting tools, and accounting processes and implement solutions to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Full administration and oversight of JVS’s expense management platform including assisting implementation and roll out of the platform
  • Process accounts payable transactions to ensure accuracy, compliance with internal policies, and adherence to internal control standards
  • Ensure contractor payments align with contractual agreements
  • Review the accounts payable aging report monthly and resolve outstanding items
  • Maintain accurate vendor records
  • Collaborate with the Senior Revenue Manager to ensure accounts payable records align with documentation required for government contract billing
  • Manage the review and import of corporate credit card transactions on a monthly basis
  • Oversee corporate credit card and participant payment systems, assisting cardholders with reconciliation and account questions, and resolving payment issues as needed
