The Accounting Manager, Tax & Compliance, is responsible for the integrity, compliance, and accuracy of the Company’s accounting outputs related to financial close, tax, and regulatory reporting. This role is a senior individual contributor who prepares and coordinates complex accounting entries, tax filings, and compliance documentation, and partners closely with the Sr. Director, Business Operations & Finance, on financial accuracy, controls, and risk management. This is a hands-on position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
  • 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, with demonstrated responsibility for: technical journal entries(accruals, depreciation, corrections) tax and regulatory compliance multi-state operations
  • Hands-on experience preparing/coordinating: sales and use tax filings payroll tax reporting corporate tax return schedules and supporting documentation
  • Strong working knowledge of: GAAP and regulatory accounting requirements wage and hour law fundamentals payroll mechanics, payroll tax calculations and related reporting requirements workers’ compensation insurance structures and reporting sales and use tax regulations and multi-state compliance general business operations and accounting best practices
  • Experience working closely with external CPAs, tax agencies, and auditors
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships across the organization and with external partners
  • Exhibit good judgment, personal integrity, and high ethical standards

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a complex, fast-moving operating environment (e.g., professional services, project-based, or multi-entity organizations) preferred
  • ERP experience required; Microsoft Business Central strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end accounting close using Business Central
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules for distribution to ownership, Managing Director, and Sr. Director, Business Operations & Finance
  • Prepare monthly and recurring journal entries, including depreciation, amortization, accruals, deferrals, and compliance-driven corrections to ensure proper classification of assets, expenses, and liabilities
  • Ensure accounting treatment aligns with GAAP, tax, and regulatory requirements
  • Prepare annual, mid-year, and year-end financial projections, including overhead, payroll, commissions, incentives, and other estimated operating expenses, to support corporate tax planning, estimated tax payments, regulatory and compliance requirements, and informed business decisions, including bonus planning
  • Models incorporate historical actuals, payroll and benefits data and recurring overhead, and are updated to reflect changes in business scope
  • Review and validate commission calculations prepared for the Sales and Account Management departments in conjunction with the Sr Accounting Specialist, and maintain summary schedules supporting commission accrual and reversal journal entries
  • Prepare and file sales and use tax returns for applicable states (e.g., CA, FL, NV, HI), including reconciliation to accounting records, maintenance of supporting documentation, timely e-filing, and payment confirmation
  • Assess, register, and maintain sales tax accounts in existing and new states as needed
  • Prepare and maintain internal multi-state sales tax reference documentation (“cheat sheet”) reflecting current regulations and company-specific tax treatment
  • Prepare and file state business tax filings
  • Prepare and file quarterly payroll tax reports; retrieve, validate, and retain payroll tax filings and supporting documentation
  • Monitor, retrieve, and respond to state tax agency notices, including filing frequency changes, rate changes, and compliance correspondence
  • Manage state tax liabilities and unemployment reporting
  • Coordinate corporate tax return process with external CPA (Eide Bailly); prepare all required tax schedules, Workpapers, and supporting documentation for reviewed financial statements and tax returns
  • Review, question, and validate CPA-prepared workpapers and conclusions
  • Prepare and document federal, state, and estimated tax payments, coordinating payment scheduling and online submission
  • Prepare annual property tax filings, including supporting analysis todetermineapplicability, valuation, and proper classification
  • Review payroll corrections and prepare related accounting adjustments and documentation explaining correction rationale
  • Prepare projected payroll data for workers ’compensation policy renewals, audits, exposure workbooks
  • Maintain and validate workers’ compensation class codes and calculate, track, and update workers’ compensation rates by class and state, including annual and mid-year coverage changes
  • Support and respond to state payroll tax and unemployment audits as they arise (e.g., Nevada UI audits)in conjunction with the People Operations Manager
  • Collaborate with People Operations to Respond to EDD and other agency benefit audit inquiries, escalating as appropriate
  • Complete required government surveys and filings, including U.S. Department of Labor / Bureau of Commerce censuses
  • Prepare revenue verification forms and other third-party compliance documentation as required
