About The Position

The Accounting Manager, Indirect Tax is responsible for leading and managing all indirect tax compliance, risk management, and advisory activities across Construction Resources and its affiliated companies. This role oversees end-to-end indirect tax obligations, including sales and use tax, property tax, excise tax, business licenses, and other non-income-based taxes. The position partners closely with Corporate Accounting, Operations, IT, and business leaders to ensure accurate tax determination, timely filings, strong internal controls, and proactive response to regulatory changes. This role also supports audits, financial reporting, system implementations, and strategic initiatives such as mergers and acquisitions, in support of the company’s continued growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • 5–7 years of progressive experience in accounting or tax, with a strong focus on indirect taxation in a multi-state environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of sales and use tax laws, economic nexus standards, exemption requirements, and state and local tax regulations.
  • Experience managing state and local tax audits, voluntary disclosure agreements, and exposure remediation.
  • Hands-on experience with ERP systems and indirect tax software solutions such as Avalara, Vertex, or OneSource.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex tax statutes and regulations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax concepts to non-tax stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to build scalable processes, implement effective controls, and lead change initiatives.
  • High level of professionalism, accountability, and commitment to continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the indirect tax function, including supervising, coaching, and performance management of team members responsible for tax data preparation, filings, reconciliations, and documentation.
  • Manage all indirect tax compliance activities, ensuring timely and accurate preparation, review, and filing of sales and use tax returns, property tax filings, excise tax returns, business licenses, and other jurisdictional requirements.
  • Determine, monitor, and maintain indirect tax nexus across jurisdictions; manage tax registrations, deregistration, and ongoing compliance requirements as business activities evolve.
  • Perform taxability analyses for products, services, transactions, and business models; advise internal partners on indirect tax treatment, pricing considerations, and compliance risks.
  • Oversee tax determination on sales and purchasing transactions, ensuring ERP systems and tax engines are properly configured, tested, and maintained.
  • Own indirect tax technology solutions, including system configuration, data integrity, testing, and validation of changes impacting tax processes.
  • Review monthly and quarterly indirect tax account reconciliations, accruals, and reserves to ensure accuracy, proper support, and alignment with the general ledger.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for state and local tax audits; manage audit strategy, documentation requests, responses, and audit defense activities.
  • Oversee exemption certificate management, ensuring proper collection, validation, retention, and audit readiness.
  • Monitor changes in indirect tax laws and regulations; assess business impact and implement necessary processes, systems, or policy updates.
  • Partner with Operations, Legal, and IT to support indirect tax compliance related to new products, services, locations, sales channels, and contracts.
  • Support mergers, acquisitions, and integrations, including indirect tax due diligence and post-acquisition compliance alignment.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and internal controls to support compliance, efficiency, and audit readiness.
  • Identify opportunities for automation, process improvement, and operational efficiencies across the indirect tax function.
