About The Position

The Accounting Lead is responsible for leading the accounting function within a debt collection environment, with a primary focus on trust accounting, client funds management, and regulatory compliance. This role provides operational ownership of accounting processes, ensures accurate and timely financial reporting, and serves as a key resource to leadership, compliance, and operations. The Accounting Lead does not supervise staff but leads the department through expertise, process oversight, and accountability.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree or higher preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, recommended
  • Minimum 4 years of accounting experience.
  • Prior experience in a law firm or debt collection agency strongly preferred.
  • Experience in transactional and/or commercial accounting is ideal.
  • Knowledge of legal accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
  • Familiarity with trust accounting, client remittance reconciliation, and debt recovery reporting.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive financial data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and data integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day accounting operations related to debt collection activity, including cash receipts, disbursements, refunds, and trust accounting
  • Maintain accurate accounting of client and consumer funds in accordance with FDCPA, CFPB, state regulations, and client contracts
  • Oversee trust and operating account reconciliations; investigate and resolve discrepancies promptly
  • Prepare and review monthly financial reports, client remittance reports, and internal management reporting
  • Ensure accurate calculation and reporting of fees, commissions, and client distributions
  • Partner with Compliance and Operations to ensure accounting practices align with regulatory and audit requirements
  • Support internal, client, and regulatory audits by preparing documentation and responding to requests
  • Identify risks, control gaps, and process inefficiencies; recommend and implement improvements
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for accounting-related questions across the organization
  • Maintain accounting policies, procedures, and documentation related to collections operations
