About The Position

Freeland Commercial Real Estate is seeking an experienced Accounting & Finance Controller to lead financial reporting, accounting standards, and internal controls across our growing commercial real estate platform. This role is ideal for a hands-on, strategic accountant who enjoys building structure, improving processes, and providing leadership with clear, timely financial insight. As Controller, you will work closely with ownership, brokerage, property management, and external CPAs. You will be responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting across multiple entities, properties, and transactions, while helping refine systems as the firm continues to scale. This is a key role within the organization, offering visibility into the full lifecycle of commercial real estate assets, from acquisitions and leasing to operations, reporting, and dispositions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 3+ years of accounting experience, ideally within commercial real estate, asset management, or professional services
  • Experience managing accounting staff
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards
  • Experience with Yardi, QuickBooks, or similar accounting platforms
  • Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with multi-entity structures
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and follow-through
  • A Controller who enjoys both strategic oversight and practical execution
  • Someone who takes ownership of financial accuracy and process integrity
  • A clear communicator who can translate financials for non-accounting stakeholders

  • Strong general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and system knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver consistent, on-time monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting for all entities and properties.
  • Completes reconciliation of general ledger accounts with outside sources to ensure proper reporting. Including, but not limited to bank and credit card reconciliation, accounts payable and receivable reconciliation.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and consistent accounting policies across the platform
  • Manage annual audit and tax coordination with external CPAs
  • Review and oversee preparation of 1099s, K-1s, and required filings
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable, including invoice processing, GL coding, and payment preparation
  • Post tenant payments, maintain rent rolls, and assist with collections tracking
  • Complete bank reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close activities
  • Organize and maintain receipts and supporting financial documentation
  • Prepare and report annual 1099s
  • Perform CAM reconciliations, accruals, and expense allocations
  • Manage and oversee inter-company invoicing and loan compliance
  • Track and report on lease critical dates, escalations, insurance compliance, renewals, and amendments
  • Lead monthly reporting of key updates for leadership
  • Coordinate with property managers on tenant-related matters
  • Directly manage and mentor the Property Accountant & Operations Coordinator
  • Establish clear workflows, controls, and review procedures
  • Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and accountability across day-to-day accounting operations
  • Train and support team members as systems and responsibilities evolve
  • Design and maintain strong internal controls across AP, AR, cash management, and reporting
  • Improve accounting workflows and documentation to support scale and transparency
  • Oversee accounting systems such as Yardi, QuickBooks, or similar platforms
  • Partner with leadership to implement improved reporting tools and dashboards
  • Ensure inter-company accounting and loan compliance are accurate and well-documented
  • Serves as a liaison between executive management, tenants, vendors and property managers and aids in quick conflict resolution when needed.
  • Support asset-level financial analysis and reporting
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning
  • Review lease abstracts, rent rolls, and escalations for financial accuracy
  • Support investor reporting and ongoing communications
  • Provide financial insight for acquisitions, dispositions, and refinancing activity
  • Maintain organized digital and physical file systems
  • Manage vendors, software tools, and office operations
  • Assist with preparation and distribution of K-1s and investor communications
  • Support general administrative needs and special projects
  • Oversee financial tracking for brokerage transactions
  • Ensure accurate client invoicing and commission reporting
  • Maintain compliance related to licensing, transaction records, and required documentation
