About The Position

Key Staffing is partnering with a well-established public sector organization within the housing and community development industry that provides essential housing programs and services to local residents. This organization plays a critical role in supporting affordable housing initiatives, rental assistance programs, and community development efforts. We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Accounting Assistant to support the Controller and assist with complex accounting functions in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. Position Overview Under the direction of the Controller, the Accounting Assistant will perform a wide range of technical and complex accounting duties , including maintaining financial records, preparing reports, reconciling accounts, and supporting various accounting functions across multiple programs and funds.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible accounting and/or auditing experience
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, practices, and terminology
  • Experience working with accounting systems and financial reporting tools
  • Ability to analyze financial data and solve problems effectively
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel required)
  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain professional relationships
  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods
  • Occasional bending, reaching, and lifting up to 20 lbs
  • Clear communication and ability to interact with staff and the public
  • Valid California Driver’s License required

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily operations of the accounting department
  • Perform duties related to: Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable
  • Payroll processing (backup support)
  • Tenant contracts and program-related accounting (e.g., rental assistance programs)
  • Inventory and property control
  • Reconcile bank statements and tenant security deposits
  • Maintain and update general and special ledgers
  • Analyze receipts and disbursements across multiple programs/funds
  • Prepare financial reports, operating statements, and balance sheets
  • Support budget tracking and financial analysis
  • Ensure proper classification and allocation of income and expenses
  • Assist with audit preparation and compliance with applicable regulations
  • Participate in developing and implementing accounting policies and procedures
  • Train or support other accounting staff as needed
  • Assist with employee benefit enrollments and new hire onboarding processes
  • Collaborate with internal departments such as IT and purchasing
