About The Position

This Accountant position performs intermediate to complex accounting duties, ensuring the accurate recording and reporting of a unit's financial transactions. The role involves managing plant fund and capital project accounting activities, processing project account activities including funding entries, project budgets, and project closeouts. Key tasks include preparing and posting journal entries, reconciling accounts, monitoring compliance with University policies and procedures and generally accepted accounting principles, preparing accounting reports and schedules, assisting with audit requests, processing and approving accounting transactions in the University’s financial system, and communicating effectively. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Responsibilities

  • Manage plant fund and capital project accounting activities.
  • Process project account activities including funding entries, project budgets, and project closeouts.
  • Prepare and post journal entries.
  • Reconcile accounts, including balance sheet accounts, plant funds, and the general ledger.
  • Monitor compliance with University policies and procedures, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), accounting standards, and university regulations.
  • Prepare accounting reports and schedules, including detailed cost analysis, project financial tracking, variance analysis for plant funds and capital projects, and spreadsheets for financial analysis and reconciliations.
  • Assist with audit requests by preparing audit work papers and responding to inquiries related to plant and capital project activity.
  • Process and approve accounting transactions in the University’s financial system.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Assist in preparing year-end entries and reports.
  • Review project financial activity to ensure appropriate capitalization, expense classification, and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Prepare and review financial transactions related to plant funds, capital assets, and construction-in-progress activity.
  • Monitor project budgets and expenditures to ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with approved funding sources.
  • Participate in relevant training and professional development.
