About The Position

What if your accounting skills could help strengthen the financial reporting that supports Southwest Airlines’ biggest decisions? The Accountant supports the Corporate Accounting Team by applying GAAP knowledge to analyze financial data, prepare reporting documentation, and partner with Finance Leaders to ensure accuracy across key statements. They’ll own salaries, wages, and benefits accounting, manage cash clearing and reconciliations, oversee health and wellness accounting, and support several operating expense categories through monthly entries, variance analysis, and alignment with FP&A partners. Through strong analytical skills, collaboration, and attention to detail, the Accountant is excited to deliver reliable financial insights that help Southwest Airlines maintain transparent, high‑quality reporting. Requirements

• Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, and the analysis and reporting of financial data
• Skilled in the use of all Microsoft Office Suite products, particularly Excel, Word, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint presentations, and trainable on company-specific systems
• Ability to effectively communicate, written and verbally, information and ideas using all forms of communication, learning to adjust tone, style, and content to meet the audience’s needs
• Ability to develop relationships and build trust with Team Members and Customers
• Ability to articulate how research and analysis were performed in preparing analytics in support of financial reporting
• Ability to create financial spreadsheets, charts, and reports that contain relevant accounting and financial performance data with some supervision and guidance
• Skilled in identifying problems and reviewing related information to develop solutions
• Ability to establish personal best practices to manage responsibilities
• Skilled in asking insightful questions and listening to understand all perspectives with a solid understanding of Business impacts
• High School Diploma or GED
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
• Intermediate level experience, fully functioning broad knowledge in: Accounting principles and practices, Financial statements and reports
• Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines
• Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines
• Must meet confidentiality expectations as to confidential, proprietary, and sensitive Company information
• Must have flexibility to work extended hours during the week and weekend, including Company holidays, during quarterly close or special projects

Responsibilities

• Perform month end close tasks that may include posting journal entries, performing reconciliations, and managing asset creation and retirement processes on a monthly and quarterly basis
• Prepare and present financial information to different audiences, including finance leaders, business partners, and auditors
• Conduct variance analysis to explain discrepancies between planned and actual financial performance
• Analyzes financial data for accuracy; identifies problems and prepare forecasts to support financial planning
• Collaborate with internal teams to gather relevant financial information.
• Support the annual audit process, including ensuring financial transactions are substantiated with proper documentation for auditing purposes
• Prepare accurate and timely financial reports for internal and external stakeholders in accordance with GAAP and Company policy
• Identify opportunities for process improvements and transformation that will provide value within the organization
• May perform other job duties as directed by Employee’s Leaders
