About The Position

Under the general direction of the Budget Manager, the Accountant II provides advanced accounting, budget, and grant management support for the school district. This position performs critical financial functions including reconciliation, reporting, grant compliance, department and program budget monitoring, and capital projects accounting support. Work is completed in alignment with state and federal requirements, district policy, and established accounting standards. The role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to partner with program administrators and departmental leadership to ensure accurate, compliant, and transparent financial operations.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a closely related field, two years of progressively responsible experience OR AA and four (4) years of related work experience, preferably in government or K-12 finance
  • Additional qualifying experience or education may substitute for the requirements on a year-for-year-basis.
  • Ability to analyze budget and financial data, identify trends, and provide meaningful recommendations
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly explain technical financial information to non-financial stakeholders
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail, and strong organizational skills
  • Competence using financial management systems, spreadsheets, and database tools
  • Ability to engage in a professional office environment and maintain confidentiality

Responsibilities

  • Grant Management & Compliance Assist with preparation and submission of grant applications across local, state, and federal funding streams.
  • Develop, enter, and maintain budgets within the State-authorized grant management system; provide guidance to grant owners on system use and budget management.
  • Perform and/or coordinate time and effort tracking, reconciliation, and documentation.
  • Prepare and submit reimbursement claims for grants; ensure expenditure alignment with approved grant budgets.
  • Maintain required documentation and records for all categorically funded programs.
  • Support compliance with local, state, and federal SEFA reporting requirements.
  • Assist with monitoring grant spending to ensure timely, accurate drawdowns and adherence to grant timelines.
  • Department, Program, and Categorical Budget Support Monitor program and departmental budgets, reviewing expenditures for appropriate coding and compliance.
  • Provide regular financial status updates, reports, and analysis to program administrators and department leadership.
  • Offer recommendations, guidance, and technical support to assist managers in interpreting budgets, planning, and meeting financial compliance requirements.
  • Accounting, Reporting & Reconciliation Perform regular accounting reconciliations to the GL in alignment with support areas
  • Prepare financial reports, expenditure analyses, and supporting documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitor budget-to-actual performance and identify variances; collaborate with departments to resolve discrepancies.
  • Assist in preparing schedules and data for audits and financial reporting cycles.
  • Maintain organized, accurate financial records consistent with district retention policies and state audit requirements.
  • Capital Projects Accounting Support Assist in the management, filing, and organization of capital project and public works documentation.
  • Support the Accounting & Treasury Manager in tracking project expenditures, contracts, and change orders.
  • Maintain accurate project accounting records for capital and construction-related activities.
  • Assist with reporting and reconciliation of capital project funds, ensuring adherence to state and district purchasing and public works requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
