About The Position

As the largest industry in Arkansas, the Arkansas Department of Agriculture is dedicated to the development and implementation of policies and programs for Arkansas agriculture and forestry to keep its farmers and ranchers competitive in national and international markets while ensuring safe food, fiber, and forest products for the citizens of the state and nation. The Department is organized into five Divisions: Forestry Division, Livestock and Poultry Division, Natural Resources Division, Plant Industries Division, and Shared Services Division.The Accountant I is responsible for performing professional accounting and financial tasks within a department. This position involves processing financial transactions, preparing reports, reconciling accounts, and ensuring compliance with state financial regulations and policies. The Accountant I will work closely with other financial staff to ensure accuracy and consistency in the agency’s financial operations.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Familiarity with governmental accounting principles, financial reporting, and budgeting processes.
  • Proficient in accounting software (e.g., PeopleSoft, QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel) and standard office applications.
  • Skilled in preparing and presenting financial statements, budgets, and reports.
  • Understanding of state and federal financial regulations and accounting standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of federal grant management, implementation, monitoring, reporting, and fiscal control practices.
  • Loan servicing experience.
  • Ability to complete complex assignments on tight deadlines.
  • Experience with state budgetary and accounting practices and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain financial records, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all transactions.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial reports, budgets, and forecasts in accordance with state regulations and policies.
  • Reconcile accounts, ensuring discrepancies are identified and resolved in a timely manner.
  • Prepare journal entries and ensure all entries are properly documented and in compliance with state accounting standards.
  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation.
