About The Position

The Statewide Accounting and Financial Reporting section is comprised of a team of accountants who have fun while getting the job done! They are enthusiastic about producing timely and accurate financial statements for the state and enjoy a good debate on how new GASB should be implemented. They are team oriented and motivated professionals who perform the following: Assist in the development of statewide accounting policies relating to state and federal regulations in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) Assist in the preparation of the State’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) including footnote disclosures Assist in the preparation of the Statewide Cost Allocation Plan (SWCAP) Participate in workgroups to research, analyze, and implement new Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) accounting guidance Work with agencies by providing technical assistance, coordination of fiscal year-end requirements and with reporting/disclosure information Approve transactions for agencies that require additional review to ensure compliance with state policies (You can learn more about the Statewide Accounting Bureau here.) In this position you will be afforded the opportunity to telework, however there will be required weekly in office day(s) in Helena. Specific conditions will be outlined as part of the job offer and must adhere to state policy.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), especially as they relate to governmental accounting
  • Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) statements
  • Financial statement and note disclosure preparation and presentation, especially as they relate to governmental entities
  • Federal regulations as they relate to state government, education, and not-for-profit organizations
  • Ability to: Provide professional customer service
  • Interpret and apply accounting technical literature
  • Research, develop, and implement accounting policies and/or complex problems with technical and non-technical people
  • Apply critical thinking to problem solve
  • Communicate effectively and diplomatically, both verbally and in writing with other staff members, agencies, and members of the public
  • Effectively work both in a team environment and independently to achieve bureau objectives and timelines
  • Prioritize workload and to juggle multiple tasks
  • Adapt to changing conditions and work responsibilities
  • A Bachelor’s degree in accounting; and
  • Two years of applicable experience. An active CPA license and financial reporting experience would be a plus; or
  • Alternate combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
