About The Position

The Access Services Librarian provides leadership in delivering responsive, user-centered services as the primary public services point of contact for students, faculty, and visitors. This position oversees the daily operations of Access Services-including circulation, collection access and stack maintenance, course reserves, and media equipment-ensuring that collections and materials are available, organized, and discoverable. In addition to managing access services operations and its student staffing, the librarian serves as coordinator of campus-wide Open Educational Resources (OER) initiatives, acts as the institutional liaison to the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), and backup to the Resource Sharing Librarian. The position also serves as a departmental liaison and contributes to the library's Collection Development team, supporting the strategic management of the library's resources and services. The Access Services Librarian collaborates closely with library and campus partners to provide seamless, efficient service delivery and continuous improvement in user experience, nurturing a welcoming and inclusive environment that promotes engagement, research, and learning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required.
  • ALA-accredited master's degree required.
  • Strong customer service skills required.
  • Strong supervision skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and monitor effective recordkeeping processes, policies, procedures, and workflow required.
  • Computer technology skills for communication, data gathering, and reporting required.

Nice To Haves

  • 2 years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated competency with an integrated library system, networks, and library operations preferred.
  • Familiarity with Springshare's LibStaffer service point scheduling tool preferred.
  • Familiarity with OCLC's Worldshare Management System (WMS) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and manages circulation and all related processes (to include):
  • Recruits, trains, schedules, supervises, and assesses student workers for public service positions in collaboration with Human Resources and the Office of Career Development.
  • Assists users with utilization of library & media equipment, including copiers, computers, printers, LCD panels, digital equipment, etc.
  • Communicates circulation policies and issues to staff, campus community, or reciprocal libraries as necessary.
  • Ensure process and procedure documentation is created and maintained as up-to-date, and the library website is updated to reflect current procedures and workflows.
  • Maintains Access Services Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) monthly, including circulation transactions (checkouts, renewals, returns), patron registrations, etc., for data-driven decisions.
  • Maintains patron database.
  • Maintains the circulation module in the Integrated Library System (ILS). Maintains records and runs reports with monthly and yearly circulation statistics.
  • Manages reserve materials and media equipment.
  • Manages sorting, shelving, and shifting of library books and publications to maintain the correct shelf order of items.
  • Resolves overdue, missing, and unreturned items each semester.
  • Responsible for stacks maintenance management, which includes conducting annual inventory projects, conducting missing/lost searches, shifting, re-setting shelves, and assessing space for growth of library collection.
  • Responsible for the nearby student printer and public copier, e.g., paper, toner, and reporting maintenance.
  • Collaborate with campus partners on outreach and events occurring in the FLC.
  • Coordinates and mediates scheduling of meeting rooms with Campus Events and BC Community.
  • Coordinates disaster preparedness and emergency procedures with the FLC Director, the library team, and Campus Police while training student staff for appropriate responses.
  • FLC Liaison to Student Life and Campus Events.
  • Manages billing processes between WMS and the College's Office of Finance.
  • Serve as backup for any uncovered shifts, which may include evenings and weekends.
  • Provide reference support to individuals and groups within the college community virtually and in person at the public services desk, including evening and weekend hours as necessary.
  • Responsible for Open Education Resources to the campus community and as liaison with the Virtual Library of Virginia.
  • Engages in current trends for professional access services librarianship, especially inclusion, technology, and management and professional development activities.
  • Serves as a liaison to academic departments and participates on the Collection Development team.
  • Serves as backup for the Resource Sharing Librarian's Interlibrary Loan process.
  • Uses strong customer service skills.
  • Demonstrates a positive, collaborative attitude with excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with all faculty and staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
