About The Position

Ball State University Libraries is seeking an enthusiastic and collaborative team member to join our dedicated Access Services and Open Education unit as the Access Services Evening Supervisor. The Evening Supervisor provides operational leadership and supervision of library staff working evening hours. This position assists Ball State students, faculty, staff, and community library users during the evening and late-night hours, answering research-related questions, checking out materials, assisting in the closing of Bracken Library on Sunday through Thursday evenings. Successful candidates will have customer service and supervisory experience and enjoy contributing to student academic success. The Access Services Evening Supervisor will work independently and collaboratively with colleagues to provide excellent customer services and to promote the services and collections of the University Libraries. The minimum salary for this position is $50,000. Requirements

  • Master’s degree in library and information science or related field from an accredited university by date of hire.
  • At least one year of related supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of basic PC equipment and Microsoft Office applications; excellent oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate Access Services and University Libraries’ public operations during evening hours; has operational authority and responsibility for supervising public services personnel during evening hours; facilitate communication between day, evening, and night staff shifts regarding operations, projects, problem situations, etc.; support a collaborative work environment and service culture to advance the strategic direction of the University Libraries.
  • Responsible for the University Libraries’ public operations during evening hours including the operations and supervision of Library Night Assistants, Education, Music and Media Evening Supervisor, Education, Music and Media Night Supervisor, and personnel in the branch libraries; assess problem situations (facilities/patrons/security) and decide course of action, including contact with external campus.
  • Assign and review work, orient and train staff, and make recommendations in all areas related to supervision, including but not limited to interviewing and selection, compensation, discipline, performance appraisal, and training and career development of personnel.
  • Interpret, analyze, and evaluate procedures, processes, and staffing patterns for the evening Access Services operation; serve as resource person for all evening services; make recommendations for improvements and/or changes to the Director of Access Services and Open Education.
  • Advise, plan, and engage in the maintenance of University Libraries’ circulation system; coordinate and participate in special projects as needed.
  • Provide outstanding circulation and information service to library users; field general purpose and reference questions about Libraries services and resources; refer users to colleagues for assistance as appropriate; check out and accept returned materials; provide assistance in the use of print and electronic resources; provide library and/or university related information and interpret library policies and procedures, including the fine and cost policy.
  • Facilitate communications between day, evening, and night staff shifts regarding operations, projects, problem situations, etc.
  • Supervise and coordinate evening activities with Access Services Librarian related to circulation and circulating equipment.
  • Investigate and process fine and replacement cost appeals and coordinate cancellation of fines and replacement costs during evening hours; monitor the maincirc email account, updating patron records for returned/problem email and referring problem inquiries to the appropriate areas.
  • Train and monitor student assistants in the performance of area work assignments and job duties.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • All of the above essential functions require varying degrees of independence, judgement, and discretion.
  • Requires the ability to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and programs.
