About The Position

Facilitates access to courses, programs, services, activities, and facilities for students with disabilities. Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop and implement best practices in promoting inclusive design. Assess and facilitate reasonable accommodations when the environment is not accessible within the guidelines of federal, state and local laws and relevant policy and procedures. Reports to the Director of Accessible Education and works with students, staff, faculty, and on and off campus constituents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's required.
  • Minimum of 2 years work experience working with persons with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of the application of federal and state laws that provide for an accessible higher education experience for disabled students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others and maintain confidentiality
  • Familiarity of types of academic accommodations for higher education.
  • Familiarity with academic advising at the collegiate level.
  • Mastery of several assistive technologies for students with disabilities.
  • Staff development, personnel and team building skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree preferred with emphasis or major in education, special education, psychology, counseling, rehabilitation counseling or other related field.

Responsibilities

  • Student Support and Advising Provides disability-related advising, support, guidance and advocacy to assist undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities.
  • Meets with students to identify barriers to full participation in the curricular and co-curricular environments and determine appropriate access and accommodations, reviewing additional sources of information as needed.
  • Coordinates the provision of access and reasonable accommodations in consultation with students, faculty and staff.
  • Provides consultation, information, resources and referral to students with disabilities and college faculty, staff and administrators.
  • Provides academic coaching to support students with various barriers related to executive functioning.
  • Collaboration and Consultation Collaborates with academic advisers, medical providers and other staff to provide support, accommodations and resource referral to students.
  • Works effectively with all members of the college community.
  • Administrative and Record Keeping Maintains appropriate records by documenting communication with and regarding students and recording recommended courses of action or accommodations.
  • Professional Development and Institutional Engagement May participate on college committees, task forces, and networks and serve a liaison role with other offices/departments.
  • Stays abreast of national, state, and local disability-related issues.
  • Participates in professional development activities through presentation, publications, attendance at conferences and/or related activities.
  • Maintains membership with relevant professional organizations.
