About The Position

The Maintenance Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring that the BHA Academy environment is safe, clean, functional, and supportive of high-quality educational and therapeutic programming. This position is responsible for conducting preventive maintenance, performing repairs, maintaining the building and grounds, addressing safety needs, and supporting day-to-day facility operations. Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Two years of experience in facility maintenance, building operations, grounds care, or a related field preferred.
Experience in a school, healthcare, or behavioral setting is beneficial but not required.
Basic knowledge of carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and general building repair.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
Ability to maintain professionalism in high-pressure or urgent situations.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, ladders, and maintenance equipment.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to safety protocols.
Organizational and time management proficiency.
Must maintain sufficient physical stamina, balance, and coordination to complete maintenance tasks safely in a dynamic school environment.
Must be able to safely lift, move, assemble, and disassemble furniture, equipment, and materials.
Must demonstrate the ability to remain calm, alert, and physically capable during urgent or emergency facility situations.
Must be able to use ladders, lifts, and maintenance equipment safely and in compliance with OSHA regulations.
Must be able to implement universal precautions when cleaning or disinfecting areas exposed to bodily fluids.
Must possess the fine motor, gross motor, and sensory abilities to operate tools, equipment, technology systems, and building infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Maintain a school environment that reflects care, dignity, and respect for the students we serve.
Respond promptly and sensitively to maintenance needs that directly impact student safety, comfort, or learning conditions.
Support staff following behavioral or crisis incidents by restoring spaces quickly, safely, and respectfully.
Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks, including, but not limited to, HVAC filter changes, equipment checks, interior paint touch-ups, and wall patching.
Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free environments across classrooms, hallways, restrooms, therapy rooms, and outdoor spaces.
Complete snow and ice removal to ensure safe access to buildings and walkways.
Conduct regular safety checks, identifying and correcting hazards (e.g., loose fixtures, damaged furniture, blocked exits).
Follow established procedures for maintenance request tracking and timely resolution.
Demonstrate reliability, accountability, and integrity in completing maintenance tasks with high quality and timeliness.
Communicate professionally with staff, students, families, and vendors.
Maintain discretion and confidentiality when working in student areas or near sensitive information.
Present oneself in alignment with BHA appearance and professionalism standards.
Adhere to OSHA, universal precautions, and internal safety protocols when cleaning biohazards or bodily fluids.
Approach unexpected maintenance challenges with problem-solving and a solutions-oriented mindset.
Remain flexible and positive during periods of high need or urgent facility issues.
Support staff by offering assistance when maintenance concerns impact instructional environments.
Seek to understand the unique needs of a therapeutic school environment and how facility conditions impact student learning and well-being.
Participate in required trainings, including safety, crisis prevention, and emergency response procedures as appropriate.
Learn and apply new skills related to building maintenance, technology systems, or safety standards as needed.
Complete preventative maintenance schedules consistently and thoroughly.
Maintain accurate logs of repairs, inspections, and completed tasks.
Ensure continuity of facility operations by addressing small issues proactively before they escalate.
Uphold consistent standards of cleanliness, organization, and safety throughout the building and grounds each day.
Support the Academy’s mission by ensuring that all environments reflect readiness for learning, therapeutic work, and growth.
Maintain facility conditions that contribute to stabilizing student behavior and preparing them to return to less restrictive school settings.
Identify facility or safety needs that may impact student success and communicate them promptly to leadership.
Advocate for safe, well-maintained spaces that promote dignity, belonging, and equal access for all students.
Take initiative to correct hazards or concerns immediately when possible.
Perform other duties and special projects to support various organizational initiatives as assigned.
Perform general repairs (patching walls, repairing furniture, replacing ceiling tiles, tightening fixtures, etc.).
Touch-up and maintain interior paint throughout the building.
Clean, sanitize, and restore areas following behavioral incidents or biohazard exposure.
Maintain building grounds including snow removal, leaf blowing, trash removal, and general outdoor upkeep.
Support setup, breakdown, delivery, and relocation of furniture and equipment.
Conduct routine walk-throughs to identify maintenance or safety concerns.
Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies and notify leadership when items need replenishing.
Support emergency protocols, including shutting off water valves, responding to leaks, or securing unsafe areas.
Coordinate with external vendors when specialized repair services are needed.
