Job Corps is a federal program of the U.S. Department of Labor. Our mission is to provide education, vocational training, and career development services to young people between the ages of 16-24. The Gulfport Job Corps Center serves students pursuing their High School Diploma or career training in the Medical Administrative Assistant, Certified Nurse Assistant, or Electrical trades. We’re proud to share that we were recently selected to host a new Advanced Training program, attracting students from Job Corps centers across the country. Additionally, we’ve just moved into a brand-new, multi-million-dollar facility - an exciting time of growth and innovation for our team! While the core instructional function for students in Reading, Math, and High School Diploma classes is similar to the traditional school system, there are some differences between the operational functions of our program including: Job Corps Instructors teach smaller groups (usually 18-20 per class), tailored to a student’s specific progress rather than following a class/grade progression model. This individualized approach requires more fluid and responsive planning, adjusting schedules to meet the unique needs of each student. Our core business hours are 7:45am-4:45pm Monday- Friday. Class time is 8:00am-3:25pm with a lunch period for Instructors. Because we're a job training program, we operate on a year-round model. Traditional school teachers work on an academic calendar that includes a summer break and shorter breaks during the year, although many school districts are moving toward the year-round model. Traditional teachers often work beyond school hours, spending extensive time on lesson planning, grading, parent communication, meetings, extracurricular activities, and other types of student support.
