POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Youth Development Director and the established policies and goals of the YMCA, the Academic Achievement Specialist is responsible for providing small group tutoring and homework assistance in math and reading to children in grades K-6 that attend the program. Instruction and activities are designed expressly to promote subject mastery, develop grade-level competencies and to teach study skills. Tutoring services are provided during the duration of the program. The YMCA mission is the highest priority and its goals for these children and their families are of the utmost importance.

Requirements

Minimum 21 years or older
Minimum of 60 semester hours from a college or university in Education; Pre K – 6 Virginia State teaching license preferred
Current CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to certify within 60 days of employment)
Clear criminal background checks including Child Protective Services
Ability to communicate and work effectively with groups of children and their parents in a loving yet professional manner
Demonstrated knowledge and maturity to observe children’s behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety practices and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
Ability to manage the daily administrative, program-related and supervisory responsibilities of the school-age childcare program

Responsibilities

Help students achieve a better understanding of specific subject material and in improving academic capabilities in designated areas
Help students develop the study skills necessary for academic success. Identify students experiencing difficulties and provide encouragement and alternatives
Provide academic assistance to assigned students, individually or in a small group setting.
Prepare for tutoring sessions, review class material, discuss the text, predict test questions, formulate ideas for materials, or work on solutions to problems
Utilize the resources of the program in order to assist the student(s) in educational endeavors
Document, track and maintain daily progress and academic records of assigned students. Provide feedback regarding student’s progress as well as behavior
Acknowledge student efforts, accomplishments and progress
Integrate an asset-based positive youth development approach in the tutoring sessions
Assist students in developing self-confidence, raising self-concept, and reducing anxiety or fear of failure in academic work
Work with students to develop a high level of motivation in academic areas and positive attitudes toward learning and studying
Uphold the association’s child protection policies, child abuse and neglect guidelines, and proper reporting procedures at all times
Help to facilitate a positive program environment that develops self-control in children through the use of positive guidance techniques
Demonstrate appropriate decision-making abilities
Demonstrate a working knowledge of YMCA mission, values, purpose, and goals. Strives for the highest standards of program excellence
Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Report any occurrence to Site Director immediately and fills out appropriate paperwork needed before the end of the work day that the occurrence happened
Maintain open lines of communication between parents-self-children-supervisor and program
Perform duties to the benefit of the YMCA and the welfare of its participants
Incorporate the five core values: respect, responsibility, honesty, caring, and faith into all aspects of the program and daily activities
