About The Position

St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA is currently seeking a compassionate and motivated Academic and Career Advisor at its Mount Mercy campus in Cedar Rapids, IA to support our online and on-campus students in aligning their academic paths with their career aspirations. The Academic and Career Planning Advisor will provide comprehensive support to undergraduate students in academic advising, career exploration, goal setting, and decision-making. This role blends academic advising with career coaching to ensure students make informed, intentional choices throughout their college journey.

Requirements

  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree or 6 years experience in the area of responsibility or related area.
  • Possess a growth mindset and strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work effectively in a team environment or independently

  • Prior experience in academic advising, career planning and development, enrollment, financial aid, or related role
  • General knowledge of the higher education industry

  • Computer literate with an ability to learn proprietary software applications
  • Preferred Master's degree in Student Affairs, Social Work or related field with experience in higher education or other professional career helping guide others to achieve personal goals.

Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic advising for a caseload of approximately 100-150 undergraduate students within designated disciplines, including online undergraduate students.
  • Present to students or families, and faculty/staff regarding academic and career advising services.
  • Facilitate one-on-one appointments with students to: Discuss academic needs and progress, such as course planning and registration, major and career exploration, adding or dropping a course, grade review and improvement, referrals, etc. Encourage career development through resume and cover letter reviews, mock interviews, job and internship search strategies, employer engagement, etc. Promote campus involvement and healthy habits that encourage academic success and personal and career growth. Prepare them for basic life skills and knowledge necessary for post-graduation success. This includes, but is not limited to graduate school prep, job search and interviewing skills, setting and obtaining goals, effectively working with others, and encouraging communication with financial services to prepare for possible post-graduation financial obligations.
  • Learn and maintain an understanding of university degree requirements, policies and procedures.
  • Be the liaison and point of contact for online coursework and designated academic programs and career industries to ensure information and updates are shared in a timely fashion.
  • Advocate for online student needs and retention by means of providing feedback and insight on undergraduate course needs, monitoring progress and communicating with students about important LMS (learning management systems) and academic deadlines relevant to their success.
  • Work collaboratively with online and campus University departments, such as admissions, registrar, academic support, faculty, counseling, financial aid, etc. to promote student recruitment and retention.
  • Maintain accurate student information in the student database.
  • Foster an environment of inclusivity and support, so that all students feel comfortable and encouraged to reach out for guidance
