About The Position

The College of Integrated studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Rock County Campus seeks an Academic Advisor (AE002). This is a full-time academic advisor position on the UW-Whitewater at Rock County campus reporting to the Director of Enrollment and Student Affairs and Academic Advising Manager. This position is student focused and will require candidates to understand diverse student needs, placement test scores, select proper courses for the intended major, explore career and transfer opportunities. This position will require a strong understanding of the institutional and system protocol for the areas of admissions, advising, financial aid, accessibility, and enrollment services. Typical hours of this position are 8:00 am – 4:30 pm Monday-Friday. Occasional evening hours may be required. The advising position engages students in decision-making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Responsibilities

  • Provide Professional Advising (academic, career, and general) to new and continuing students: Hold weekly appointments with students and participate in the advisor rotation of the one-stop shop.
  • Review placement test scores and direct students to the proper course selection
  • Identify needs for undecided students.
  • Understand transfer institutions, majors, and admissions requirements.
  • Guide students through the transfer process
  • Work with at-risk and probation students to provide academic success.
  • Be a resource for academic success programs.
  • Identify needs and provide guidance for students.
  • Assist staff with the enrollment of high school students involved in concurrent enrollment.
  • Assist with ongoing advisor training.
  • Be familiar with and cross-trained in areas of admissions, financial aid, and student financials.
  • Utilize all software programs and available technology when advising students.
  • Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures.
  • Serves as the main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options and refers students to appropriate institutional resources.
  • Implements academic advising events such as workshops, student orientation and registration, welcome events, and probation programming.
  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Rights and Privacy Action (FERPA) policies.
  • Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum.
  • Proactively engages students as needed.
  • Participates in the campus-wide advising community, providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co-curricular programs offered by the school/college.
  • Assist staff with campus programs related to recruitment and retention of new and currently enrolled students.
  • Assist staff with orientation and student events.
  • Provide needs analysis and assessments to the campus and institutional office as requested.
  • Work with ambassadors providing tours for campus visits.
  • Assist with the promotion of registration for continuing students and follow up with non-registered students.
  • Assist with services provided by all staff, which may include registration/enrollment, transfer, and general information.
  • Use the Navigate system to keep student notes and follow up on early alerts/progress reports.
  • Cross-trained in all consolidated areas of the Solution Center and provide back-up assistance as needed.
  • Other projects and reporting as assigned by the Director of Enrollment and Student Affairs and the Academic Advising Manager
