About The Position

Serve as the SSS STEM Academic Advisor to a caseload of approximately 60-70 students who are members of the UW Oshkosh Student Support Services (SSS) STEM program. The SSS STEM program serves 120 UW Oshkosh students annually. SSS STEM students are first-generation college (parents have not earned a baccalaureate degree) students and/or students whose family income meets federally established guidelines. Students with a documented disability may also be served in the program. The goal of SSS STEM is to increase the college persistence and graduation rates of the students it serves. SSS STEM is one of the U.S. Department of Education funded TRIO programs. During the academic year, evening hours on a weekly basis may be required. Evening hours in the summer and weekend hours during both the academic year and summer on an occasional basis are required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience working with educational programs specifically with marginalized, underrepresented student populations.
  • Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, or a related field.
  • Advising or counseling experience.
  • Experience supporting the needs of first-generation, income eligible students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with Student Support Services (SSS) and/or other TRIO programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and implementation of project services under the direction of the program director and in collaboration with the other Student Support Services staff members
  • Provide support for an assigned caseload of student participants in the areas of academic advising, life skills development, student success development, career planning, financial literacy, and financial aid and scholarship assistance.
  • Encourage students to participate fully in the college experience including study abroad, internship opportunities and consideration of graduate school
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the SSS/SSS STEM director
  • Communicate and collaborate with the campus community.
  • Serve on campus committees and participate in campus events and activities
  • Participate in New Student Orientations to assist with the recruitment of eligible students into the program and obtain documentation to verify program eligibility.
  • Advocate for first-generation and limited-income students.
  • Support the university's enrollment goals and assist with orientation by advising first-year students who may be eligible to participate in our TRIO SSS program
  • Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
  • Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
  • Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
  • Proactively engages students as needed
  • Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
