Academic Advisor (part-time 28 hours/week) The part-time Academic Advisor provides accurate, timely, and personalized academic advising to admitted accounting students. This role empowers students to make informed academic decisions, achieve academic success, and progress efficiently toward on-time degree completion. The advisor demonstrates strong alignment with the BYU Marriott School of Business Mission, Vision, and Values, as well as the BYU AIMS, and integrates these principles into daily advising practices.

  • Level of knowledge and competence in academic student services

  • Familiarity with the BYU environment, website, policies and procedures, etc.
  • Ability to enforce academic policies with clarity and without confrontation or defensiveness
  • Ability to interact well with a wide variety of students and circumstances (i.e.: distressed students, challenging situations, stressful seasons, etc.)
  • Strict sense of accuracy, organization efficiency, and timeliness
  • Computer experience and proficiency in basic office computer programs and equipment
  • Commitment to professional development

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4 years in advisement-related experience OR Master’s degree OR Advisement certification (or equivalent graduate coursework) and 0-4 years in advisement-related experience

  • Level of knowledge and competence in academic student services

Responsibilities

  • Advise admitted accounting students in regard to course requirements and graduation planning.
  • Provide advice to accounting students regarding degree requirements
  • Meet with and advise students who are admitted into the BYU Marriott School of Accountancy
  • Counsel students regarding the development of educational plans consistent with their life and career goals
  • Advise on admission and academic requirements, class scheduling, transfer courses, academic and extracurricular opportunities
  • Enforce university and college policies and curriculum
  • Maintain a sense of team unity in maximizing routine interactions and in contributing to seasonal/occasional needs (i.e.: support college events, participate in hiring/training needs, accept delegated assignments, attend recurring meetings, etc.)
  • Engage in professional development activities to retain currency and relevancy in advising practices
