Major Duties Under general supervision, the Academic Advisor delivers comprehensive academic advisement, outreach, and support for College of Health and Human Development (CHHD) students. The incumbent assists students in achieving their academic goals through guidance, planning, and engagement in college programs and events that enhance their educational experience and promote success at CSU Northridge. Academic Advising & Support Services: Serves as a member of a CHHD team of advisors who deliver a wide range of services to all new and continuing students. Using developmental advising theory, holistic advising techniques, and computer-assisted advising information, advises each student based on the unique skills, abilities, interests, and needs of that student. Assists in the probation and Academic Disqualification process. Working together, the advisor and the student will identify activities, programs, initiatives, and referrals that will assist the student in achieving success at CSU, Northridge, and facilitate graduation. Explains university degree requirements, academic policies, procedures, and regulations. Assists students with educational planning, course selection, and other advisement-related issues. Provides holistic support services to EOP students. Outreach & Campus Events: Assists in representing the College SSC/EOP at all campus and community outreach activities/events as assigned, including but not limited to Open House Activities, career activities, community college admission days, CHHD student welcome events, Commencement, and New Student Orientation. Assists with planning, coordination, implementation, and organizing student activities and events. Curriculum Collaboration & Support: Work closely with Department Chairs regarding student inquiries and issues, substitutions, and curriculum updates. Professional Development & Dept Communication: Attends staff and department meetings, development/training sessions, and represents the College and/or Department on University committees. Provides regular updates, prepares oral and written reports. Performs other duties as assigned. Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a job-related field.
  • Equivalent to two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
  • A Master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Thorough knowledge of developmental and holistic advising practices, student success strategies, and university policies, procedures, and degree requirements.
  • Ability to interpret complex academic regulations and apply advising theory to support diverse student populations in achieving academic progress and timely graduation.
  • Strong ability to establish trust and rapport with students through empathetic listening, cultural sensitivity, and effective communication.
  • Skilled in guiding conversations that promote self-efficacy, goal setting, and academic accountability, while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality in all student interactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess individual student situations, identify barriers to success, and develop appropriate solutions or referrals.
  • Proficient in using computer-assisted advising tools and student information systems to track progress, analyze data, and support decision-making in academic planning and retention efforts.
  • Knowledge of effective outreach strategies and event coordination practices within higher education settings.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement student-centered activities and community events that enhance engagement, promote college visibility, and support recruitment and retention initiatives.
  • Skilled in collaborating across departments and representing the College professionally at diverse functions.
