About The Position

The Software Engineering Program at Iowa State University is seeking qualified candidates for an Academic Adviser II . Software Engineering is the ninth largest undergraduate major at Iowa State University, the third largest major in the College of Engineering, and the college’s largest computation major. The Academic Adviser II plays a key role in supporting students throughout their academic journey by providing high-quality advising, coordinating the Software Engineering Learning Community, and contributing to recruitment and student success initiatives. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about university and college resources, policies, and procedures; understand engineering curriculum requirements; and demonstrate strong communication, advising, and problem-solving skills.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Academic Advising Provide professional academic advising services for current and prospective students and their families.
  • Advise students on degree planning, academic support services, academic policy issues, graduation requirements, degree certification, and degree auditing.
  • Assist students in making informed academic decisions, including course selection to meet graduation requirements.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources such as counseling, academic support services, and financial aid.
  • Interpret and communicate academic policies and procedures to support student success.
  • Software Engineering Learning Community (SELC) Coordination Serve as the lead coordinator for the Software Engineering Learning Community.
  • Facilitate course grids for each fall and spring semester in partnership with the Office of the Registrar.
  • Monitor registration activity in learning community course grids.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise SELC Peer Mentors.
  • Hold weekly meetings with SELC Peer Mentors to support their work and ensure consistent student engagement.
  • Coordinate SELC events to promote belonging, community-building, and positive academic outcomes.
  • Collaborate with assigned SE faculty for SE 1860, offered each spring semester.
  • Prepare and manage the SELC annual budget.
  • Prepare and submit the SELC annual report.
  • Partner with the University Learning Communities office to support program goals.
  • Records and Reporting Maintain accurate student records and documentation.
  • Update academic progress reports for assigned students.
  • Assess and apply transfer credit evaluations.
  • Approve minors, withdrawals, and separations.
  • Submit documentation related to academic reinstatement.
  • File, route, and maintain required academic paperwork.
  • Recruiting and Outreach Participate in recruitment initiatives, including meeting with prospective students and families.
  • Assist with outreach activities and work closely with recruitment liaisons.
  • Collaborate with community college partners to support seamless transfer planning.
  • Meet with current students exploring a change of major or additional major within Software Engineering.
