No matter where you're located—on campus or online—you are part of a mission that transforms lives and makes a difference across the state of Texas and beyond The Academic Advisor II, under Director of Student Support Services supervision, addresses individual academic, financial, career, and social issues that affect the success of first-time students to the University. Coordinates academic and tutoring services for a caseload of Tarleton State TRIO SSS students. Monitors academic progress of participants, providing intervention and advocacy when needed. Develops educational workshops and resources. Serves as a Campus Security Authority. This position is located on-site at the Tarleton State University Waco campus.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social or behavioral sciences, or related field
  • Two years of related experience to academic standing, retention and graduation including:
  • -Experience coordinating services that increase postsecondary retention and graduation
  • -Experience supporting students served by federally funded access, readiness, or success programs
  • -Experience coordinating academic, tutoring, or mentoring services
  • -Experience assisting students who encounter academic, financial, or systemic barriers to college entry or completion
  • -Experience monitoring and documenting students’ academic progress
  • -Experience developing and delivering workshops on academic topics
  • -Experience providing postsecondary academic advising
  • -Experience conducting needs assessments related to academic support in postsecondary education
  • Strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Innovation to provide educational services during challenging times.
  • Exceptional Problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of postsecondary admission and financial aid processes

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, education, or related field
  • 3 years’ experience working in a higher education or social work setting
  • Succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those encountered by low-income, First-Gen, or individuals with disabilities.
  • Experience working for a grant funded position
  • Experience working with SSS or similar educational program
  • Experience providing financial literacy information

Responsibilities

  • Creates purposeful interactions between students and the institution to design individualized, student-centered educational plans that lay the foundation for student success.
  • Provides academic advising, needs assessment, and academic monitoring to assigned participant caseload. Caseload includes at least 45 students from designated academic colleges.
  • Assists students in understanding academic studies, curriculum requirements, and the relationship between majors and careers.
  • Conduct workshops on various academic and non-academic topics
  • Develop Career development skills and oversee intern for a day for Waco and surrounding communities.
  • Develop graduate/professional school resources and exploration
  • Assumes primary responsibility for early intervention, implementation, and follow-up for students assigned to the University.
  • Assists students in addressing problems and connects them with appropriate support services on campus
  • Organize academic and social activities and field trips
  • Manage tutorial services on the Waco campus
  • Provides general information about financial aid and scholarship requirements and processes, as well as other options for financing education.
  • Manage tutorial services on the Waco campus
