About The Position

Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia's capital city and five nearby counties. Annually, our four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. Reynolds is seeking an Academic Advisor (G3) to join our student success team. The Academic Advisor will work in both in-person and virtual settings to support prospective and currently enrolled students in identifying academic and workforce pathways that align with their interests, strengths, and career goals. This role is critical in guiding students through academic planning while also helping them address non-academic barriers that may impact their ability to succeed. This position serves a diverse student population that reflects the rich cultural landscape of Virginia, with more than 40% of Reynolds students identifying as racially or ethnically diverse. Success in this role requires strong knowledge of the barriers that can impact educational attainment, along with a deep commitment to helping students overcome those challenges and reach their goals.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of academic programs, degree requirements, and enrollment services within a higher education setting
  • Ability to apply student development theory to support academic and personal growth
  • Proficient in interpreting and communicating institutional policies and procedures
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and work effectively both independently and in team settings
  • Skilled in using technology and student information systems to track and manage student progress
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to fostering an inclusive, student-centered environment
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with coursework in counseling or a related field

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic and career advising to prospective and current students across academic and workforce programs
  • Guide students in developing educational plans that align with career goals and program requirements
  • Identify and address non-academic barriers that may impact student success
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of student interactions, outreach efforts, and progress
  • Refer students to appropriate college and community-based support services
  • Implement academic interventions and follow up on students at risk of not meeting academic goals
  • Leverage advising tools and student information systems to deliver responsive, data-informed support
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in advising
  • Promote a culture of inclusion and equity in alignment with Reynolds' Flight Path initiatives
  • Support college-wide retention and completion efforts by collaborating with faculty, staff, and student services teams
