About The Position

Seattle University is seeking an academic advisor to advise students for the Cornish College of the Arts at Seattle University.
Undergraduate Academic Advisors guide students through educational planning and registration processes; assist students in resolving challenges to educational progress; and connect students to information, opportunities, and resources at the University. Academic Advisors advise a caseload of students assigned by major and/or class standing, interacting with students individually in scheduled and drop-in appointments, in small groups, online, and through occasional events and programs.
Undergraduate Academic Advisors collaborate with campus partners, faculty, and academic departments to ensure timely and accurate information in support of student success. This position works as part of an advising center team assigned to a specific school or college and reports to the University Advising office. Academic Advisors educate the whole student through holistic and proactive advising services.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and two years previous experience working in an educational environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
• All candidates must demonstrate experience and ability to work successfully with diverse populations and a desire to contribute to a team that is dedicated to anti-racist principles and promotes equity.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills with excellent listening, writing, and speaking skills.
• Experience working with students who are academically or personally struggling.
• Prepared to work in a fast-paced environment that embraces change and variety.
• Effective decision making and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency in MS Office Software such as Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.
• All positions at Seattle University require a criminal history background check.

Nice To Haves

• Master’s degree and/or three years of experience in higher education.
• Experience interpreting, communicating, and applying academic policies.
• Experience with CRM software, particularly Slate, and other online tools.
• Knowledge of program development, program evaluation, and student development.
• Previous experience and skills in the use of student data management systems.

Responsibilities

• Engages students through intentional processes of educational and career planning, based on thoughtful discernment of goals and carried out through regular review and revision. The processes may include exploring/declaring/changing/adding majors, minors, and/or career paths and developing course and degree plans that incorporate co-curricular activities.
• Helps students understand degree requirements, assists them with appropriate course selection and planning during quarterly registration periods; guides students to reflect on their progress and reviews final degree requirements.
• Attends to the various planning needs of individual students including but not limited to international students, student athletes, military-connected students, first generation students, and prospective students who are considering enrollment at Seattle University.
• Assists students in their academic and personal adjustment to Seattle University and with issues that could affect their educational progress. This assistance may include outreach to students who are struggling academically, responding to early warning processes and referrals to students in need of support, and arranging academic and personal interventions as appropriate.
• Guides students through problem-solving on a wide variety of concerns, ranging from registration to personal and life issues, and refers them to resources for academic development and personal support.
• Informs students about available resources and options for university engagement; collaborates with relevant offices and promotes participation in such co-curricular activities as studying abroad, community engagement, leadership development, research, and internships.
• Provides timely and accurate responses to student inquiries via email or text and utilizing CRM (customer relationship management) software.
• Maintains accurate records of advising conversations and tracks student progress through data collection and analysis in CRM software.
• Coordinates with assigned academic departments to ensure access to up-to-date information, including degree requirements, recommended pathways, and course scheduling.
• Serves as a resource to faculty and campus partners regarding academic policy and procedures.
• Participates in campus events for prospective students and families, as well as student life-cycle events such as convocation and commencement.
• Develops and produces written (print and online) resources as requested.
• May serve on campus-wide committees to represent academic advising and work on academic initiatives.
• Participates in university-wide academic advising efforts and initiatives, including data collection.
• Participates in internal and external professional development and training opportunities.
• Participates in team meetings and activities.
• Supports the Lead Advisor and team in coverage of the advising center office and availability for drop-in hours.
