Job Overview: The primary duties of the Academic Advisor position involve the proactively advising traditional undergraduate students with the goal of helping them to engage effectively with their academic and extracurricular activities, to fully understand and negotiate career pathways, and to increase their levels of satisfaction, academic stability, and rates of retention and degree completion. As an integral member of the Holistic Advising team, the Academic Advisor will collaborate with members of the assigned academic departments, other members of the Holistic Advising team, and various divisions on campus to help provide proactive and comprehensive outreach, support, and advising to our traditional undergraduate students to increase student well-being, retention and success. The Academic Advisor will also teach sections of the first-year seminar course, College Success Seminar, as needed. The Advisor makes referrals to various resources for tutoring, counseling, and financial assistance.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in psychology, social work, higher education, or related field preferred.
  • Two years of previous experience in academic advising preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills (particularly in working with a diverse student population), and organizational skills are required.
  • Computer literacy, including Word processing, Excel spreadsheets, and database management, are required.
  • Experience working with Colleague and Navigate preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task, identify priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.

  • Technology Skills: Proficient in MS Office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), e-mail, and the Internet. Ability to learn new applications quickly, including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications. Ability to teach by leveraging the learning management system and other technology tools.
  • Language Skills: Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a number of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work independently and as a group member in developing and executing project plans. Ability to work in the theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with assigned new and returning students regularly to develop and monitor educational plans and success goals, including academic planning and registration.
  • Provide students with information regarding support resources, both academic and personal.
  • Collaborate with faculty mentors of the assigned students.
  • Serve as a liaison between the students' administrative offices: business, registrar, and financial aid offices.
  • Actively participate in New Student Orientation, New Student Welcome Weekend, and other academically related events on campus , such as Open Houses and Admitted Student Days.
  • Actively engage in the College’s student success work.
  • Actively engage with the learning communities in the First Year Experience Program ; including teaching sections of CC 102: College Success Seminar.
  • Monitor student attendance, navigate alerts, and progress reports
  • Serve as a member of the Student Support Team
  • Attend advising-related professional development opportunities as required
  • Coordinate Help with your Hold events
  • Serve as a member of the Navigate leadership team
  • Regularly meet with assigned students on Academic Review and other at-risk students and assist them in the development and implementation of student success plans.
  • Monitor students with multiple academic alerts, work with the Registrar's Office to identify student attendance and administrative withdrawal issues, and reach out to students and faculty mentors as a form of early intervention.
  • Keep up to date with advising best practices through professional development opportunities; conduct holistic advisement-related workshops and trainings for all faculty advisors.
