About The Position

Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC), located in Reno, Nevada is seeking applicants for an Academic Advisor. This is an updated job posting with new minimum qualifications. If you have already previously applied, your application is still under consideration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education, student development or a related field.
  • One (1) year of experience as an Academic Advisor or related student services area.
  • OR An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of experience academic advising at a community college or university.
  • One year of experience working with PeopleSoft.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.
  • Master's degree in education or counseling field from an accredited institution preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Advise continuing and transfer students through individual appointments and group workshops.
  • Assist students with goal setting, major exploration, degree options, and educational planning for all TMCC degrees and programs .
  • Work in a collaborative manner with Advising staff and other campus departments to ensure the information given to students is accurate and timely.
  • Answer questions students have through Express Advising and advising email.
  • Help students understand placement options so they are properly placed into the correct English and Math.
  • Assist students with their MyTMCC so they are informed on how to use an academic advisement report, What-if Scenario, My Planner and enrolling into classes.
  • Place course substitutions for students who have courses transferred in that are similar by nature to TMCC courses and assist students with credit for prior learning requests.
  • Unofficial evaluation of domestic and foreign transcripts
  • Attend professional development workshops and conferences to enhance the quality of Academic Advising.
  • Practice TMCCs Academic Advising core values of Authenticity, Making a Difference, Inclusiveness, Service to Others, Compassion, Exploration, Balance and Growth.
  • Knowledge of advising theory and best practices including Appreciative Advising
  • Utilize student systems (i.e. PeopleSoft, e2e Achieve, OnBase, TES, Canvas, etc.) to advise students and maintain accurate records
  • Assists with or coordinates an advising initiative or programming areas to include establishing annual goals, assessing effectiveness, and continuous improvement of initiative or area.
  • Other duties as assigned.
