About The Position

The Ryan Family Student Center (RFSC) within the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State University Park is seeking a highly motivated Academic Adviser to join our team. The RFSC is the home for undergraduate activities in the College—academic advising and learning support, career counseling, support for student engagement, studying and collaborating—it’s a busy and exciting place. Responsibilities: Work closely with the Director of Advising to ensure holistic student success and high-quality academic advising Assess student needs and provide academic advice for a small roster of assigned advisees as well as other students in the college during drop-in hours and scheduled appointments; advise students in course selection, scheduling, and other academic matters; monitor academic progress; assist in resolving academic issues; make referrals as needed; maintain and ensure confidentiality of student records Assist with coordinating designated student group testing, consulting, and advising program/services Prepare and disseminate information to a variety of audiences Coordinate Orientation programs for the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences to include new, first-year students (NSO), new transfer students (TSO), and change-of-campus students transitioning to University Park (COC). Serve as liaison between students, faculty, staff, campus and University constituents. May also include presenting university-wide presentations as part of NSO programming or assisting in the development of university-wide resources and documents Co-manage re-enrollment, change of major or campus, leave of absence, grade forgiveness, program/plan update, and other processes that support the director of advising and senior associate dean for the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences Coordinate outreach to EMS students as part of graduation checks. Participate in outreach around academic reviews. Manage processes as well as develop and distribute communication to change of major students and concurrent major requests into the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences as well as graduating students in need of general education and/or university requirements substitutions May evaluate academic advising services; as instructed, propose, update, or develop programs/improvements May serve as mentor to other academic advising staff; coordinate training and development

Requirements

  • Master's Degree
  • 8+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted
  • 6+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted
  • Significant experience in academic advising, teaching, counseling, or related fields is valued
  • The ability to retain some evening hours (approximately biweekly) in the Ryan Family Student Center is required
  • A dedication to empowering students and building meaningful relationships with advisees, as well as attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team are fundamental to success in this position
  • The employee will communicate and collaborate with multiple university offices as well as the five EMS departments, serve on university committees as appropriate, and represent the values of Penn State and EMS in all that they do
