Medical/Surgical Manager Summary of Essential Functions Administratively responsible for all operations and activities within specific service areas. Supervises and coordinates activities of assigned services according to hospital policy, objectives, and philosophy. Educational Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Licenses and Certifications Registered with the Board of Nursing for the State of Texas. CPR Certification. ACLS Certification. Must have current class “C” driver’s license (State of Texas) and be capable of driving a manual transmission vehicle. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Demonstrates competency in the care of patients. At least four years of experience in an acute health care facility strongly preferred. Performs wide variety of duties, to include accepting responsibility for the direction, control and planning of activities in assigned service area. Perform under stress when confronted with critical or unusual situations. Maintains efficiency and control. Sets priorities, makes decisions based on available data and supervises others. Remains current in continuing education in both the nursing profession and in the field of specialty. Must remain insurable under liability insurance policy, i.e. over age 21 and no moving violations. Possess the manual dexterity to safely operate a motor vehicle. Physical Requirements Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds, pushing and pulling heavy objects. Corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Working under stressful conditions and working irregular hours. Some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids. Duties and Responsibilities Serves as a role model. Collaborates in promoting professional working relationships with peers, subordinates, and superiors. Responsible for conducting performance evaluations, performance counseling and overseeing staff to ensure adherence to United Regional’s policies and practices. Assesses, plans, directs, and evaluates employees to ensure competency of all age groups in specific service area. Encourages and provides opportunities for in-services and workshops. Assists personnel in developing and achieving performance goals and suggestions for improvement. Maintains employee records to include attendance and tardy infractions. Takes necessary action to reduce absenteeism. Coordinates with division staffer and educator to ensure adequate orientation for incoming staff members. Make rounds on floors; be aware of status of patients; visit patients/families to assess satisfaction with service. Adjusts staffing to meet service needs. Maintains unit operations in line with budgetary guidelines. Ensures reporting and evaluation of all incidents involving unsafe practice, error, or accidents. Events entered the system within 10 days of report. Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of and enforces unit routines, policies, and protocols. Accepts, interprets, and implements policies and procedures pertaining to personnel and patients. Plans safe, efficient, and economical functioning of service to ensure Joint Commission and other relevant standards are met. Performs all other tasks/responsibilities, as necessary.
