About The Position

Value Driven Solutions is seeking an experienced 5S Implementation Consultant for a short-term contract engagement to design, deploy, and hands-on implement a comprehensive, integrated 5S workplace organization system. This project aims to enhance safety, operational readiness, and day-to-day efficiency across the entire facility footprint, covering both Warehouse Operations and Vehicle Maintenance areas. The consultant will establish location logic, visual standards, and sustainment routines while focusing intensive hands-on work in high-impact zones where daily operations, safety risks, and lost time are most concentrated. The engagement will deliver fully implemented priority zones, facility-wide standards, and clear ownership routines to ensure long-term sustainment.

Requirements

  • Proven track record (3+ years preferred) leading hands-on 5S workplace organization implementations in warehouse, maintenance, industrial, or similar operational environments.
  • Deep expertise in Lean principles, with specific focus on 5S methodology and visual management tools.
  • Experience applying 5S in warehouse/distribution and/or vehicle/equipment maintenance settings (school district, fleet, or public sector experience a plus).
  • Strong facilitation and training skills; ability to engage frontline workers, technicians, and supervisors effectively.
  • Hands-on, practical approach — comfortable with physical reorganization, tool shadow boarding, floor taping/marking, and creating visual standards.
  • Excellent project management skills for short-duration, high-intensity engagements.
  • Ability to work independently on-site while maintaining clear communication and reporting.
  • Understanding of safety protocols in maintenance and warehouse environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification or formal training in Lean/5S (e.g., Lean Six Sigma Yellow/Green Belt, 5S Specialist certification).
  • Prior consulting experience delivering 5S or Lean projects for public sector clients or educational facilities.
  • Familiarity with sustainment auditing and change management in operational settings.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct an initial assessment of the current facility state (based on provided layout) across Warehouse Operations (receiving, storage, picking, staging, dispatch, and material handling support) and Vehicle Maintenance Operations (parts storage, tool control, support zones, and technician readiness areas).
  • Design and deploy one cohesive 5S framework that aligns both operational systems for consistency, safety, and ease of sustainment.
  • Lead full application of the 5S methodology in priority/high-impact operational zones:
  • Sort: Identify and remove unnecessary items; retain only what's essential for daily work.
  • Set in Order: Establish clear, logical "homes" for every item with visual aids (e.g., shadow boards, labeling, floor markings).
  • Shine: Implement thorough cleaning, inspection, and maintenance protocols to make safety/equipment issues immediately visible.
  • Standardize: Develop simple visual rules, checklists, and expectations for ongoing adherence.
  • Sustain: Create ownership assignments, light audit/check routines, and training to maintain gains post-engagement.
  • Perform hands-on implementation, including physical reorganization, visual management tool creation/installation, and direct collaboration with facility staff and technicians.
  • Provide on-the-floor coaching, training, and guidance to KCSOS team members to build internal capability and buy-in.
  • Establish facility-wide 5S standards and guidelines for non-priority areas.
  • Develop and deliver sustainment tools, including audit schedules, responsibility matrices, and performance tracking mechanisms.
  • Document the implemented system, including before/after conditions, key changes, and recommendations for ongoing continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate closely with Value Driven Solutions project lead and KCSOS stakeholders to ensure alignment with project goals and timelines.
