About The Position

Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a 3rd Class Mechanic to support docking operations at our site in Norfolk, VA. This position works 1st shift (Mon-Fri 7am-3:30pm). Able to accomplish all duties of lowerclassmen Block and haul various vessels Builds keel and bilge blocks, cradles, and shoring for supporting ships in dry dock, marine railways, shipways, or building docks. Using woodworking hand and power tools Positions and secures blocking in accordance to ship's blueprints Proficient in using centering chains, lasers, oil sticks, and magnetic tapes Ability to identify various types of wood (Oak, Pine, Salt Treated, Composite, etc.) Ability to identify various types of ropes (Nylon, Samson, single braided, double braided, synthetic, manila etc.) Proficient in dry dock, railway, and travelift line handling Ability to moor vessels using different types of mooring equipment (Cleats, bitts, bollard bitts, chocks, H bitt, etc.) with instruction Ability to tie different knots (Barge hitch, Tow bridal) Qualified to operate the following equipment: Drydock equipment (Capstan, grip hoist, flood valves, discharge valves) Forklifts Impact wrench Nail gun Come a long Basic chainsaw operation (Startup, blade change, general maintenance) Trained in emergency procedures on drydocks, railways, and travel lift Successfully complete the maintenance tasks of dry docks and railways Ability to locate Stern Reference Point (SRP) Introductory Blueprint reading skills Rigging duties Trained in guiding Travel lift on and off pier as well as grade beams Ability to deckhand and assist in hooking up tugs to vessels Must identify all piers and berthing locations within shipyard Will be required to adhere to safety policy and wear personal protective equipment- hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes and, when necessary, respirator Understand and act upon instruction Work independently to complete responsibilities Must have regular, reliable attendance

Requirements

  • 24 hour and 7 day (24 / 7) availability
  • At least 1 year of maritime experience in trade
  • Technical training required
  • Knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the Mechanic
  • Must be able to work effectively with others
  • Must be a steady, reliable worker
  • Must be able to comprehend and follow complex instructions
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
