About The Position

Overview: Summer Interns complete a 10 week internship centered around professional development, career growth and building the necessary skills to succeed. Summer Interns participate in projects and department initiatives that accelerate career growth and play an important role in building the future of the Bank. As an Intern, you will gain exposure to other departments through guest speakers and industry leaders and a built-in network with peers as well as priority consideration for full time opportunities throughout the Bank. Position Overview: Join our Finance team as a Specialized Accounting Intern and gain hands-on experience in complex and technical areas of accounting within the banking industry. This internship offers exposure to specialized accounting topics across the Commercial, Consumer and Wealth businesses and Corporate and Treasury functions. You’ll work alongside experienced professionals to support the Bank’s financial reporting and control environment, while deepening your understanding of advanced accounting concepts. What You’ll Learn: How banks apply specialized accounting standards under U.S. GAAP The role of technical accounting in financial reporting and risk management Real-world applications of accounting for complex transactions and instruments Exposure to internal controls, audit support, and policy interpretation

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
  • Minimum Cumulative GPA of 3.0

Responsibilities

  • Assist in compiling and analyzing the performance of banking products and services
  • Participate in specialized accounting projects on an ad-hoc basis
  • Support the preparation of technical memos and accounting position papers
  • Assemble reconciliations of financial data and supporting schedules to the general ledger
  • Monitor accounting standard updates and assist in evaluating their impact on specialized areas
  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., Treasury, Risk, Financial Reporting) to ensure accurate and compliant accounting treatment
  • Complete duties and responsibilities of an entry-level professional nature specific to assigned specialized accounting areas
  • Ensure activities adhere to established internal policies and external regulations as applicable
  • Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable
  • Complete other related duties as assigned
