2026 Summer Intern - Translational Medicine

RocheSouth San Francisco, CA
13d$50 - $50Onsite

About The Position

In Translational Medicine, our vision is to create the future of medicine by applying borderless, rigorous translational science to radically accelerate drug development and deliver transformative new treatments to patients. Our mission is to strategically develop and implement innovative biomarker and diagnostic strategies to drive the entire clinical portfolio, while conducting deep-dive translational research to generate new therapeutic insights and maximize our scientific and patient impact. We are seeking a highly motivated and talented intern to join Genentech's Translational Medicine - Oncology team. As a core member of the Breast, Gyn, and Prostate Franchise, you will work alongside a scientist to drive the discovery and validation of novel biomarkers for clinical-stage targeted therapies. This role focuses on understanding how epigenetic landscapes influence tumor sensitivity to combination therapies targeting core signaling pathways. You will acquire critical, hands-on experience in multi-omics analysis and advanced in vitro modeling. This project directly contributes to our commitment to foundational translational research by elucidating resistance mechanisms and identifying predictive biomarkers to guide future clinical strategies. This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

Requirements

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (Enrolled student. Preferably PhD students in their last year of study).
  • Required Majors: Computational Biology, Cancer Biology, Systems Biology, Genetics, Genomics.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Complements our culture and the standards that guide our daily behavior & decisions: Integrity, Courage, and Passion.
  • Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture techniques.
  • Experience with analysis of epigenetic profiling data (specifically DNA methylation).
  • Familiarity with cell viability assays and pharmacological dose-response studies.
  • Basic bioinformatics skills (e.g., R or Python) for analyzing omics datasets.

Nice To Haves

  • Detail-oriented and self-directed individuals with a strong interest in chromatin biology and targeted therapy resistance.
  • Prior experience integrating multi-omics datasets (e.g., combining expression and epigenomics data).
  • Along with the submission of your CV, a cover letter is optional.

Responsibilities

  • Bioinformatics & Data Mining: Analyze epigenomic and gene expression profiles from large-scale internal and external datasets to identify gene programs associated with dependency on epigenetic and kinase signaling pathways.
  • Model Development: Utilize and characterize select cell line models with defined epigenetic states to interrogate drug sensitivity.
  • Mechanistic Validation: Investigate the hypothesis that epigenetic dysregulation sensitizes tumors to specific signaling pathway inhibitors when combined with targeting of epigenetic modifiers.
  • Biomarker Discovery: Work towards identifying potential epigenetic biomarkers that can predict patient response to novel combination strategies.
  • Scientific Communication: Process, analyze, and interpret experimental data to ensure results align with project objectives, and present findings at team and departmental scientific meetings.

Benefits

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.
  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
  • Ownership of challenging and impactful projects.
  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
  • Final presentations of project work to senior leaders.
  • Lead or participate in intern committees to design and coordinate program events and initiatives.
  • Professional & personal development curriculum throughout the program, including networking opportunities, workshops, and panel discussions.
