The Center for Excellence for Computational Sciences is a data driven division of Roche/Genentech with a mission to revolutionize how targets and therapeutics are discovered and developed, ultimately enabling novel treatments for patients across the world. Computational Biology and Medicine (CBM) and Artificial Intelligence for Biology & Translation (AIBT) are two departments within this division that collectively work to apply new methods and approaches to the analysis of biological and clinical data. This summer, CBM and AIBT, along with the Department of Human Genetics within Research Biology, are looking for a joint summer intern focusing on one of two inter-related projects: The use of sequence-to-function (S2F) DNA models as priors in fine-mapping human genetic data (particularly in non-coding DNA) The formalization of a method for projecting genetic risk scores into cell-type specific gene programs derived from single-cell sequencing datasets and, in particular, programs derived from interpretable gene scores derived from single-cell embeddings In both cases, the primary focus would be on projects impacting our current collaborations with Immunology, and in particular COPD and IBD. This internship position is located in South San Francisco, CA and is onsite/hybrid. The Opportunity Interaction with members of both departments to formulate a novel research program, including lab meeting contributions and attendance of seminars/project meetings Participation in career advising programs Exposure to a range of computational projects in the Pharmaceutical industry Work with ML derived descriptions of gene expression alongside ML-enhanced interpretation of genetic variation for the development of more informative genetic risk scores The opportunity to develop a robust method/code base that will directly make an impact on pipeline development Program Highlights Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship. Participation in department meetings and journal clubs Program start dates are in May/June 2025. A stipend will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects. Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
