About The Position

The mission of the Clinical Insights and Automation(CI&A) team in the Early Clinical Development (ECD) department at Genentech is to optimize the support of clinical systems to provide high-quality clinical trial data insights and to offer data science-related consultation to the study teams. We leverage cutting-edge data science and operation data management to facilitate the study of start-up planning. We develop advanced analytical data visualization and conduct predictive analysis to increase the efficiency of clinical data review and clinical operations with the ultimate goal of driving data-driven decision-making throughout the study lifecycle. This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site. We are seeking a Data Analytics Summer Intern to support ongoing initiatives in data transformation, analytics automation, and AI tooling. This role provides hands-on experience working with real-world clinical data, modern data platforms, and AI-enabled analytics applications. The intern will collaborate closely with data analytics leaders, software engineers, and product stakeholders to improve data pipelines, enhance AI chatbot performance, and develop dashboards and visualizations that support decision-making.

Requirements

  • Must have attained a Bachelor's degree (recent graduates not currently enrolled in a grad program).
  • Must be pursuing a Master's degree.
  • Must have attained a Master's degree.
  • Must be pursuing a PhD.
  • Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as R, Python, SAS, and SQL.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Spotfire, ggplot2, Matplotlib, Plotly or similar).
  • Hands-on experience with clinical data.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate within a multidisciplinary team.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of early-phase clinical trial data and operational workflows.
  • Experience with or exposure to Snowflake.
  • Familiarity with LLMs (Large Language Models) or AI/ML concepts.
  • Knowledge of Git or other version control systems.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze clinical trial and real-world data to generate actionable insights and improve decision-making.
  • Design, develop, and implement analytical workflows and visualizations using tools such as R, Python, SAS, and Spotfire.
  • Contribute to data review improvement initiatives and advanced data science efforts, including medical data review checks and advanced data analytics.
  • Assist in improving data mapping and pipeline design for analytics and work with structured datasets in cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake).
  • Participate in team brainstorming sessions to identify opportunities for improving data analytics and visualization capabilities.
