About The Position

At the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, our primary goal is to protect the environment and public health. We do this by ensuring compliance with federal and state environmental laws. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency wants you to be our newest intern in the Division of Surface Water (DSW) at our Groveport Field Office. As a college intern, you'll receive training and orientation on our surface water program and assist the technical staff with various program duties. We have multiple positions to choose from: Modeling Intern Participate in Ohio EPA’s College Intern program by assisting the technical staff with routine duties. Routine activities will include in-field sample collection, sample processing, equipment maintenance, sample QA/QC as well as data processing and data management. These positions will spend most of their time in the field collecting/processing samples. Sampling locations will take you across the state, sampling both small streams and large rivers. Field internships are one of the most desired positions that Ohio EPA provides. Modeling positions will involve the use and calibration of the country’s largest fleet of water quality sampling EXO1 sondes. Interns will also be involved in the data management process of one of the largest sets of continuous data in the nation. Interns will assist with model development when they are not in the field. Ecological Assessment Intern Participate in Ohio EPA’s College Intern program by assisting the technical staff with routine duties. Routine activities will include in-field sample collection of fish and aquatic macroinvertebrates. These positions will spend most of their time in the field collecting/processing samples. Sampling locations will take you across the state, sampling both small streams and large rivers. Field internships are one of the most desired positions that Ohio EPA provides. Fish and aquatic macroinvertebrate positions will involve the use of electrofishing gear, boats, wading crafts, and dipnets for insects. Interns will assist with equipment maintenance and data entry when they are not in the field.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in a college degree program directly related to the position or have recently graduated within the quarter/semester immediately preceding the start date.
  • Major area of study: Environmental Science, Water Resources, Chemistry or Engineering (Environmental, Civil, Chemical) or relevant field of study.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, public relations, Agency policies and procedures and permits as applicable.
  • Skills in computers (word processing and database work)
