Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The expertise of the laboratories’ technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems. The Materials Science Department (MSD) in the Space Materials Laboratory conducts anomaly resolution, advanced characterization, and applied research in materials chemistry, polymers, and composites. MSD is seeking a motivated early-career research associate with a strong foundation in chemistry, polymer characterization, and thermal analysis. This position is ideal for candidates who are eager to apply their training in a hands-on laboratory setting.   • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university program in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemistry or a related field (pursuing or conferred within last 12 months)
  • 0-2 years of hands on laboratory experience with thermal analysis or polymer characterization methods
  • Experience with handling materials and recording results
  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain analytical instruments
  • This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Work in Polymers/Composites section of the Materials Science Department
  • Thermal Analysis: Operate instruments such as DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry), TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis), and DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analysis) to evaluate polymer transitions, thermal stability, and mechanical response.
  • Metallographic Sample Preparation: Mount and polish samples for cross-sectional materials investigations
  • Data Collection & Reporting: Record test parameters, compile raw data, and prepare preliminary data plots and tables for staff scientists. Contribute to internal reports and documentation.
  • Failure Investigations: Assist with investigations and participate in root cause investigations as required.
  • Lab Operations: Perform instrument calibration checks. Use troubleshooting skills to resolve instrument related deviations and problems and maintain equipment reliability.
  • Team Collaboration: Work with scientists across composites, materials science, engineering, chemistry groups to support customer and research projects.
  • Problem Solving: The role involves addressing a wide range of chemical and materials-related challenges to develop and implement technical solutions. It requires strong adaptability, quick learning, and excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
