While the unemployment rate returned to pre-pandemic levels, mass layoffs continue. And many people are finding themselves out of a job. Where do you turn when you are unexpectedly unemployed? Employees who are temporarily out of work through no fault of their own may qualify for unemployment benefits.

Each state has specific work search requirements people must meet to be eligible for unemployment benefits. In the interest of public safety during the pandemic, the requirement to actively seek work was temporarily suspended. However, all 50 states have since reinstated active work search requirements to maintain eligibility for benefits.

We’ve researched the work search requirements for unemployment benefits in every state.

In order to receive unemployment benefits in the state of Alabama, you must make a reasonable and active search for work. You are required to enter work search contact information with each weekly certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What constitutes a valid job search activity when meeting unemployment work search requirements?

Valid job search activities typically include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, participating in workshops, networking events, or interviews, and utilizing employment agency services. Each state may have specific guidelines on what counts, so it's essential to check with your state's unemployment office for detailed requirements.

Can volunteer work or part-time employment affect my unemployment benefits and work search requirements?

Part-time employment can affect your unemployment benefits as it may reduce the amount you're eligible to receive. However, it can also count as a work search activity in some states. Volunteer work usually does not count towards work search requirements and does not typically affect your benefits unless it limits your availability to accept paid employment.

If I am unable to meet the work search requirements for a valid reason, what should I do to ensure I continue receiving unemployment benefits?

If you have a valid reason such as illness, emergency, or temporary inability to work, you should immediately inform your state's unemployment office. Documentation or proof may be required, and each state has its own process for exemptions or waivers. It's crucial to communicate promptly to avoid interruption in your benefits.
