About The Position

The Zookeeper position is responsible for the care and maintenance of a variety of animals within the BioPark, specifically in the Primate department. This role involves assisting curatorial and veterinary staff, performing various activities related to animal husbandry, and participating in the BioPark Training and Certification program. The position is safety-sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two to four years of experience in exotic animal husbandry, zookeeping, or arthropod rearing depending on the level (I, II, or III).
  • Experience working in an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited facility preferred.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain within ninety (90) days from date of hire.
  • Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from hire date.

Nice To Haves

  • Scuba certified or the ability to obtain a scuba certification within 1 year of hire for pertinent departments.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of animal behavior and physiology.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and care for a variety of animals within the BioPark.
  • Assist curatorial and veterinary staff as needed.
  • Perform a variety of activities relative to the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Clean and maintain assigned animal enclosures according to established BioPark guidelines.
  • Prepare adequate diets and operate equipment for safe animal/arthropod consumption.
