The Zoning Code Inspector is responsible for conducting technical inspections and enforcing compliance with state and local zoning laws, as well as building code requirements. This role involves reviewing and inspecting various zoning-related codes and ordinances in Springfield, ensuring that commercial and residential properties conform to regulations. The inspector collaborates with the Building Department and other local officials, providing technical information and legal opinions on zoning matters.

  • Assist and collaborate with Building Department Inspectors and local officials on zoning issues.
  • Inspect commercial and multi-family or residential structures for compliance with ordinances and codes.
  • Distribute technical information regarding zoning laws and methods.
  • Interpret and review engineering plans, plot plans, and related documents for compliance with regulations.
  • Review applications for various licenses and permits, including signs and special permits.
  • Provide legal opinions on non-conforming structures and uses based on city data and registry resources.
  • Experience in technical trades, municipal planning, real estate, or building inspections.
  • Graduation from a Four-Year College or University, with courses related to zoning laws, environmental sanitation, or city planning.
  • Strong knowledge of the Massachusetts State Sanitary Code and General Law.
  • Ability to investigate complaints and issue orders for correction of violations.
  • Experience attending Board of Appeals meetings and Public Hearings.
