BronxWorks Afterschool aims to help young people build skills to support their academic achievement, raise their confidence and cultivate their leadership skills through service learning and other civic engagement opportunities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent credentials.
  • 3 Months to one-year experience working with youth in a recreational, educational and/or social environment.
  • Clearance through New York State Central Registry and New York State Office of Children and Family Services required.
  • Ability to establish rapport with young people.
  • Engaging personality and detailed orientated skills are essential.
  • Strong oral and written communication, time management and organizational skills are necessary.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other standard business technology is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with or knowledge of best practices in youth development preferred.
  • Experience with or knowledge of whole language philosophy preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the consistent and safe supervision of children and youth in grades K–8, maintaining required teacher-to-child ratios (1:10 for ages 5–9 and 1:15 for ages 10 and up).
  • Conduct and document daily attendance headcount checks at the start, end, and intermittently throughout the day.
  • Ensures accurate, real-time knowledge of the number of children in care and their whereabouts during all program activities and transitions.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director and/or Coordinator to create and coordinate activities for youth and advance program goals.
  • Facilitate daily group youth activities that promote learning, creativity, and well-being — including STEM/STEAM, literacy, fitness, and social–emotional development — and prepare a structured weekly lesson plan.
  • Demonstrate positive role-modeling for children in grades K–8th grade by showing empathy, respect, and cooperation in daily interactions and reinforcing these behaviors through consistent, age-appropriate guidance.
  • Provide classroom management and instruction.
  • Successfully complete all mandated company, funder and DYCD DOH safety trainings and maintain renewals
  • Attend staff training sessions.
  • Meet monthly with program coordinator and/or program director for supervision.
  • Attend regular staff meetings.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
