About The Position

The State of Ohio is a drug-free workplace. This position, Youth Specialist (Juvenile Correctional Officer), is with the Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS). DYS is seeking a diverse team member to oversee facility functions, providing mentorship, experience, and knowledge to youth in their care. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader with a passion to habilitate youth. DYS's mission is to improve Ohio's future by habilitating youth and empowering families and communities, believing all youth can reach their potential and staff are their greatest resource. DYS is the juvenile corrections system for Ohio, mandated to confine felony offenders aged 10-21. Youth engage in programming addressing criminological and behavioral needs. DYS's guiding principles include valuing staff, treating everyone with respect, cultivating a trauma-responsive environment, providing support for youth and families, advancing inclusion, encouraging collaboration, and celebrating successes. Starting pay is over $50,000 per year, with potential for an additional $30,000 annually by working two overtime assignments per week. New Youth Specialists receive their first pay increase after six months. No prior corrections experience is necessary, but a strong willingness to be dedicated daily is required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must successfully complete Juvenile Correctional Officer assessment
  • Must be 21 years of age at time of application

Responsibilities

  • Provide safety, security, custodial care, & surveillance of assigned youth
  • Utilize provided training to observe, intervene, and de-escalation youth behavior and conflicts
  • Manage and maintain security and a positive interaction during and after family visits
  • Complete all required documents (reports, logs, evaluations etc.)
  • Oversee movement on facility grounds and outside trips
  • Monitor and instruct youth on general housekeeping duties
  • Maintain awareness of unusual behavior and crisis situations
  • Collaborate and provide information to division leadership
