About The Position

Responsible for the planning and management of services and programs for children up to grade 5 and their families. Serves as manager of the youth services department and coordinates with other library departments for a multi-disciplinary and cross-functional approach to programs and projects. Duties include developing programs, selecting materials, and maintaining collections, monitoring patron behavior, and training library users, supervising, evaluating, and training staff and volunteers. This position is also entrusted with making professional-level library technical decisions. The work requires that the employee has considerable knowledge, skill, and ability in every area of public libraries, particularly library services for youth.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Minimum Three (3) years of experience, or one (1) year of lead librarian, or increasingly responsible library experience; public library experience preferred; staff supervisory experience strongly preferred. Or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Knowledge of: General library practices and procedures; public library services and programs for youth; cataloging principles; reference, research and bibliographic tools and techniques; integrated library management systems; trends in library services; municipal library operations; instructional and teaching methods.
  • Skill/Ability to: Work cooperatively and maintain effective interpersonal and working relationships with the public, organizations, and co-workers; work well with adults and youth; understand and be sensitive to the needs of individuals of all ages and backgrounds; exercise independent judgment and initiative; thrive in a fast-paced environment with numerous interruptions; demonstrate excellent oral, interpersonal and written communication; speak, read, and perform in front of audiences; cooperate with co-workers as a team member; deliver quality customer service; organize; and problem solve; pay attention to detail; self-motivate; make a positive impact in the community; demonstrate proficiency in using and troubleshooting relevant technology systems including hardware and software such as Microsoft Office, electronic databases, e-mail, and internet in addition to other office equipment and systems; continuously lead and innovate; work evening and weekend hours.
  • Safety/Physical Requirements: Tasks involve bending, stooping, and ability to lift/carry up to fifty (50) pounds. Individual must be able to shelve materials of various sizes. Primarily work in indoor conditions with occasional program work in outdoor conditions. Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for a period of time as necessary.
  • Must have (or obtain within twelve (12) months of being hired) Family Place Libraries training and possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as manager of the youth services department by directing the operations of the department, applying, developing and updating library policies and procedures accordingly.
  • Performs the full range of supervisory functions including interviewing, selecting, training, evaluating, counseling, developing, and disciplining employees and volunteers.
  • Plans, develops, implements, and publicizes high-quality and cost-effective programming, services, displays, and instruction for youth and their families; determines needs, format, budget, and resource requirements; implements marketing and outreach efforts; recruits and trains volunteers; coordinates projects and event logistics.
  • Provides technology assistance and integrates new and emerging technologies into youth services collections and programming.
  • Represents and promotes the library, its services, and programs to library users and community entities using various media.
  • Establishes and participates in cooperative initiatives with organizations in the community that support families and their educational, entertainment, and social needs.
  • Develops the youth collection based on trends and community needs; monitors the collection development plan for the youth collection; oversees collection development activities of staff.
  • Provides professional research assistance, instruction, and readers advisory services to library users.
  • Addresses and facilitates the timely and effective resolution of complex patron issues.
  • Assists with fundraising, grant projects, volunteer recognition, and other special events.
  • Serves as a member of the library management team to assist with policymaking, near-term and long-range planning, financial management, marketing, and development and evaluation of services and programs.
  • Maintains awareness of trends in youth services and issues affecting youth. Attends meetings and workshops, participates in professional library organizations, and serves as liaison to other community agencies serving children.
  • Works youth service desk assisting library users as needed.
  • Travels occasionally to local outreach locations.
  • Serves as essential emergency personnel when required.
  • Adheres to regular and prompt attendance.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
