The McHenry Public Library District is seeking an on-site Youth Services Library Associate - Digital Services with experience in creating digital resources, managing social media, or providing tech training. This individual is responsible for delivering exceptional customer service to library patrons through two main ways: at our questions desk, providing basic reader’s advisory and addressing technology questions; and creating digital services, resources, and training for youth and teens. This position will also be responsible for updating and maintaining sections of our website and social media channels. The salary for this position ranges between $17.00 and $19.57 per hour, depending on qualifications. This position requires a flexible schedule to work a combination of days, weeknights, and weekends. Benefits: Includes IMRF (Pension Plan) and PTO benefits. Summary: Under the supervision of the Youth Services Manager, contributes to the planning and implementation of library programs, collections, and services to youth and teens. Primarily serves ages birth through age 18 and their caregivers. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Answers reference questions and provides basic reader’s advisory in person, by telephone, or by email in a prompt, courteous, and confidential manner. Maintains working knowledge and can provide basic instruction in library technology, including but not limited to catalogs, eReaders, tablets, laptops, public computers, printers, copiers, scanners, hotspots, and fax machines. Maintains knowledge of current and popular youth and teen literature and other media. Keeps current with print and online reference and reader advisory resources to answer patron questions competently. Prepares and merchandises department displays and creates bibliographies. May plan and implement programs that respond to the needs and interests of youth, teens, and/or caregivers, which may include story times, summer reading, book clubs, after-school activities, and family programs, both in person and virtually. May assist in selecting and maintaining materials for assigned areas of the youth and/or teen collections in various formats. Participates in professional development and networking activities both in person and online. Ensures all policies and procedures of the McHenry Public Library District are followed. Digital Services, specialized tasks include: Implements digital services and resources specifically for youth and teen audiences, ensuring age-appropriate content, interfaces, and accessibility for youth patrons and their caregivers. Collaborates with the marketing department and public services staff to promote library digital resources, devices, and services for youth and teens through multiple mediums, including in person, on the Library website, on social media, and through print materials. Creates and delivers instruction and training on digital services, devices, and resources to youth and teens through various means, including print materials, one-on-one technical help, group training, information sessions, and online tutorials. Plans and delivers engaging technology-based programs for youth patrons and their families, including makerspace-style workshops, digital material creation, or database instructional sessions. Supports Youth Services staff in providing patrons with user instruction on digital services, devices, and resources. Creates and maintains youth-focused content on the Library’s website and social media channels related to Youth and Teen Services, which may include: sourcing information and links that are age-appropriate, timely, and relevant; ensuring accessibility for all ages and abilities; and finding interactive age-appropriate elements. Curates displays on digital media services, including updating digital service flyers and promotional materials, and curating apps and digital content on circulating technology (Kindles and other Library of Things materials for youth and teens). Keeps current on youth-focused emerging technologies, digital library resources, devices, social media platforms, apps, and services for youth and teens through various networking and professional development resources. Provides digital mentorship to youth patrons, demonstrating responsible technology use, online safety, and fostering digital fluency. Ensures digital services and resources are accessible to all youth patrons and their caregivers. Additional Duties May communicate and cooperate with schools, daycares, and other local community organizations that serve youth and teens. May serve on library committees and committees of library and community organizations that align with the library’s mission. May maintain library website and social networking sites. The staff may be in the role of one or more of the following areas: Early Literacy, Youth Programming, Teen Services, School Services, and/or Bilingual Services. Assumes other duties and projects as assigned.
