About The Position

The Youth Mentor position guides individuals selected for employment through the workforce development program. You will work side by side with individuals seeking to gain practical work experience to assist them with successfully completing their individual career development goals. You will be in a unique position to truly change lives as you help individuals in need gain the necessary skills and experience to live productive and fulfilling lives!

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematics at a high school level.
  • A valid Michigan driver’s license with less than six points; ability to maintain less than six points throughout the duration of your employment with Pioneer Resources.
  • Ability to lead and teach with empathy and dignity for a diverse group of individuals, including those who may require additional accommodations and/or considerations.
  • Minimum one-year prior work experience in a professional role where primary duties included some form of mentorship, teaching, and/or training responsibilities preferred.
  • This employee must be able to pass a drug and alcohol test and physical examination. If the background check reveals disqualifying information, employment shall be terminated unless the disqualifying information was successfully appealed as inaccurate, expunged or set aside.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age with three years of licensed driving and a good driving record with less than six (6) points.
  • Basic office administration experience needed to fulfill the record-keeping requirements of the position:
  • Keep duties and deadlines prioritized for successful completion to ensure all agency requirements are met.
  • Basic computer skills to complete documentation.
  • Display high levels of proficiency regarding organization; must be able to maintain schedules and work assignments for yourself and the work crew assigned to you.
  • Must be able to conduct daily duties with little to no supervision; prior experience demonstrating strong, individual work ethic with a high level of self-management, a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience mentoring teens in career development roles preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and coordinate with the employer the crew members’ job responsibilities and procedures.
  • Act as an intermediary between crew members, the Vocational Services Manager, and department supervisors.
  • Work with the Vocational Services Manager to determine appropriate job duties for work crew members assigned to various worksites.
  • Provide training and supervision of individuals engaged in grounds, custodial or other supported employment activities; training may take the form of demonstration, verbal and physical prompts, or other methodologies appropriate to the individual.
  • Teach safety skills; assure that crew members follow safety practices and wear recommended personal protective equipment.
  • Intervene when required to prevent or redirect behaviors that are inappropriate in a work setting.
  • Mentor and guide participants on professionalism in the workplace.
  • Ensure that crewmembers are treated with respect and dignity on the job.
  • Record information related to performance levels of crew members, including daily input into agency database(s).
  • Perform the same jobs as members of the crew, assuring completion of all required tasks, in order to help “lead by example” as you teach critical work skills to teammates.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of agency policies and procedures.
  • Assist with assigned camp activities for one week at the conclusion of summer working with individuals ages 12-21. Assuring safety, following plans of service and coordinating activity schedules at camp.
