About The Position

The Camp Leader II will lead daily operations of the Y’s BIPOC STEAM Camp and workshops, a culturally responsive Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math program designed to uplift and empower youth from historically underrepresented communities. This leader will guide a team of seasonal staff to deliver engaging, inclusive, developmentally appropriate, and identity-affirming STEAM programming that supports youth voice, leadership development, and belonging. The Camp Leader II will foster a safe, enriching, and empowering environment aligned with YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, while providing leadership in planning, implementing, and evaluating activities, supervising staff, maintaining communication with families, and serving as the camp lead for youth safety, behavior management, and emergency response.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • At least 18 months of experience serving or working with youth
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience
  • Enrolled in the Child Care Division Central Background Registry (oregonearlylearning.com)
  • Must meet the Office of Child Care requirements for the position, including:
  • 240 hours of qualifying experience working with children in the last five years in a Certified Child Care Center or comparable group care program, or
  • An AA Degree in a related field such as: Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Education, Human Development, Recreation, etc., or
  • A Step 8 or higher in the Oregon Registry
  • Adult/Child/Infant CPR & First Aid
  • Oregon Food Handlers certification
  • Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect
  • Prevention Is Better Than Treatment
  • Introduction to Child Care Health & Safety
  • Foundations for Learning
  • Maintain a valid Oregon driver’s license, insurable driving record, and evidence of insurability

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading culturally specific or identity-centered youth programs
  • Previous YMCA or camp experience
  • Conversational fluency in Spanish or another language
  • Educational background in STEAM-related field
  • Lived experience reflecting the communities served in this program
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement developmentally appropriate program activities
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with participants, families, and colleagues from all backgrounds
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills

Responsibilities

  • Oversees daily operations of the BIPOC STEAM Camp and workshops, ensuring high-quality programming and camper safety
  • Serves as the primary point of contact and decision-maker during daily camp operations, ensuring staff accountability, camper safety, and alignment with YMCA policies
  • Supports pre-camp staff training and provides ongoing coaching throughout the season
  • Provides camp-based supervision and support to seasonal staff and volunteers
  • Implements culturally relevant, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate activity schedules
  • Actively engages in games and activities with youth, modeling enthusiasm, teamwork, inclusion, and positive behavior
  • Ensures positive participant experiences through proactive behavior management strategies that reflect YMCA values
  • Maintains positive communication and relationships with families
  • Monitors daily compliance with licensing standards, safety protocols, and YMCA procedures
  • Ensures the physical environment is safe, clean, and conducive to learning and play
  • Supports daily camp logistics, including check-in/out, transitions, and snack/lunch
  • Responds appropriately to incidents, injuries, behavior concerns, and other needs during the camp day
  • Assists with end-of-camp wrap-up and family communications
  • Models YMCA core values in all interactions with youth, families, and staff
  • Other duties as assigned
