About The Position

The University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) invites applications for a part-time, remote Adjunct Faculty position in Philosophy and Ethics within the Bachelor of Arts program, offered through the YourPace competency-based education (CBE) model. This fully online, asynchronous, 8-week course emphasizes critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and reflective judgment, and fulfills the University’s General Education Inquiry and Analysis requirement. Adjunct faculty may serve as Instructors of Record and/or contribute to course development. Teaching assignments occur six times per year with multiple start dates. Faculty report to the Chair of Arts & Humanities and work closely with the Coordinator of General Education. There is also potential for curriculum development within an interdisciplinary undergraduate philosophy minor. UMPI is a public institution accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). YourPace is a flexible, subscription-based CBE program designed for adult learners. All courses are fully online and asynchronous. Adjunct faculty are compensated according to applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements/MOUs.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Philosophy
  • Experience teaching Introduction to Philosophy and/or Introduction to Ethics at the college level
  • College-level teaching experience in philosophy, ethics, or related humanities disciplines, particularly at the introductory or general education level
  • Experience using learning management systems and instructional technology
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse students
  • Commitment to competency-based education and self-paced, mastery-focused learning

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in Philosophy
  • College-level teaching experience across a broad range of topics in Western philosophy as well as normative ethics for General Education students
  • Experience teaching upper-level philosophy courses, including Classical or non-Western traditions
  • Background or interest in applied ethics (professional ethics, bioethics, environmental ethics, social justice)
  • Experience teaching in CBE, online, hybrid, or nontraditional formats
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness (student evaluations, peer observations, teaching portfolio)
  • Commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments supporting students from varied backgrounds and skill levels
  • Expertise and interest in developing curriculum for a philosophy minor in CBE

Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging, student-centered instruction in a fully online, asynchronous environment
  • Teach assigned courses in Introduction to Philosophy and Introduction to Ethics, following approved curriculum and course outcomes
  • Facilitate student mastery of critical thinking, logical analysis, ethical reasoning, and reflective judgment
  • Provide timely, substantive feedback on assessments and projects (within 72 hours)
  • Guide students in developing skills in critical reading, logical analysis, ethical deliberation, and clear written communication
  • Support student progress in the CBE framework and maintain regular communication via email, Zoom, or phone
  • Utilize learning management systems and instructional technology effectively
