Job Description A heavy equipment mechanic is responsible for diagnosing mechanical issues and performing repairs on large machines such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, cranes, and backhoes. They use diagnostic tools, hand tools, and specialized equipment to troubleshoot problems involving engines, hydraulics, transmissions, electrical systems, and braking systems.

Requirements

  • Strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills
  • Knowledge of diesel engines and hydraulic systems
  • Ability to read schematics and service manuals
  • Experience using diagnostic software and tools
  • Physical strength and ability to work in demanding environments

Nice To Haves

  • Technical training or certification in diesel/heavy equipment repair (often preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Inspect heavy equipment to identify mechanical or electrical problems
  • Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, lubrication, and filter replacements
  • Repair or replace worn or damaged parts (engines, hydraulic pumps, hoses, etc.)
  • Test machinery after repairs to ensure proper operation
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic codes
  • Maintain service records and documentation of repairs
  • Ensure equipment meets safety and operational standards
