The job of a Yard Jockey involves the safe handling and maneuvering of tractor/trailers and other large equipment within the yard to support loading and unloading operations. Key duties include conducting pre-shift and post-shift inspections of yard and dock equipment, efficiently loading and unloading freight using various tools like forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks, and ensuring freight is properly secured to prevent damage during transit. The role also requires setting up, breaking down, and hooking trailers, managing tilt bars on pup trailers, and operating landing gear. Yard Jockeys are responsible for monitoring the yard for safety issues, working in diverse outdoor weather conditions, and performing general dockworker duties as needed. Effective communication with dock supervision, line haul drivers, and fleet services personnel is essential, and regular attendance is a requirement.
